Politics The COVID-19 pandemic news and discussion.

Seems Italian mortality rate even worse then Chinese.
Not really because they are not at the same stage of outbreak. If the mortality is 4.6% in Italy, it is 3.8% in China but 4.6-5% was what the chinese had at the beginning of the outbreak when they were overwhelmed by the number of cases and there was a delay in the time for care.
The mortality reduces the sooner you take in charge the ill persons. A delay of 24 h can be lethal

Hope on this. But Italians have two month to prepare that Chinese have not. And that is great european first-world medicine after all. Seems descipline and proper and early quarantine regulation is more important. These chinese stopped trains and roads blocked with concrete walls doesn't looks like crazy communist overreaction and overregulation now.

I'm pretty sure most people here would have wished for restrictions on travel to and from Northern Italy and affected regions in China or at least quarantine when they return. At least in Finland that is how all of these cases (that are now at around 30) got started, via air travel to northern Italy (and one with Chinese tourist). Western governments just don't want to do anything that would look like "panicking".

To this those not supporting would say it would be bad for the economy, but I doubt those few business meetings done via skype (in case of few specific countries), instead of flying there, would have much of a difference. Especially considering how much this show now is going to cost.

but but but ..... freedom!! ??
The way the things are :
If the govs had went all PRC on their citizens (travel and move restrictions, quarantine, involvment of military etc) you would have screaming about dictatorship/nazi/etc

Now the govs are overwhelmed, citizens start to panick so the govs are labelled lenient, stupid, only focusing on the economy instead of human life.

It is a typical case of dam if you do, damn if you don't

Travel restrictions to few countries would still have been different from what PRC is doing.

And how is this better:
Health authorities on Sunday afternoon said Pitkäjärvi middle school in Kangasala, some 20 kilometres east of Tampere, would not open on Monday in an effort to contain a coronavirus outbreak.

Officials decided to close the school after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus, according to Merja Lehtonen, head of the department of education in Kangasala. Authorities said 90 of the school's 500 pupils and staff had been exposed to the virus. Anyone exposed to infection would be placed under quarantine, according to Tampere University Hospital district. The school hosts grades seven through ten.

Than having those people on a flight self quarantine at home. Of course there would be people complaining (I wouldn't), but you can fairly easily calculate number of people that would be affected with each measure. EDIT: Note that most of these flights are now cancelled, so there would only have been only few affected weeks when people don't fly due to government decisions.

Whatever measures are taken will be temporary. Word of the day. Vaccines, community immunity (hey that rhymes!) and warmer weather will fizzle this out. Pent up demand for travel plans they were delayed will roar back. Yes, people will die, just like they do every year and yes, that's sad. But, the economic panic is, in reality, a great, great time to buy stocks.

I'm genuinely running out of pasta and don't want to go and buy more in case I look like a panic buyer stocking up for end of days.

I still have a decent stock of toilet paper, gonna purchase some more rice and pasta. I’m not overly worried even though my area is quite concerned and affected. I’m worried about the impact on general economy, possible lack of meds even paracetamol and so forth.

Yeah, my travel plan for April in Central Europe is now more likely going down the crapper but it is what it is. Over 1200 cases in France and I can’t blame a foreign govt for taking precautionary measures. I want to get my money for the plane tickets back though.

Ireland seems to be opting to cancel Paddy's Day parades in many areas, Dublin (the capital) parade is still on though for the moment.

Daft question CR but do the parades take place on the day or the nearest weekend ?

Joke aside (see above) the social consequences are showing their heads

Stocks fall again on continued coronavirus worrie

Coronavirus, the doctor from Bergamo: «We have to choose who to treat and who not, as in any war. Stay at home »
Christian Salaroli, anesthesiologist resuscitator in Bergamo: "It is decided based on age and health conditions. Some of us, primaries or kids, come out crushed ... Stay home. I see too many people on the street. "

I wonder why you guys keep on saying the warmer weather will "fizzle it out" cause its pretty god damned warm in South East Asia, yet its spreading.

School is out, people tend to be outside more. That’s historically when flu season here ends.

Because it could have if it behaved like the flu (which is not the case and was assessed pretty recently)
But also because you are quoting a guy that is in a permanent denial state when something doesn't fit his narrative

But its not the flu and the infection is faster amongst adults right? So why stick to the flu model?
