Politics The COVID-19 pandemic news and discussion.

First two deaths in Germany today.

Well my wife sent me panic shopping :) I felt guilty when at the cashier. Nearly all canned goods, flour, pasta and water shelves empty.

She got all flights cancelled this month and they are slowly closing schools around us.

My housekeeper tends to be a prepper type & stocked the larder about a month ago. Now I come home to the smell of bleach, alcohol & get the eye roll from her whenever I kiss my wife or one of my kids. I did draw the line at 4 dozen cans of tuna fish.

Ireland seems to be opting to cancel Paddy's Day parades in many areas, Dublin (the capital) parade is still on though for the moment.

Should give it up for Lent anyway?!! ;-) I know, I know.... Surely there is a dispensation already in place for a little frivolity on the Saint's day....

"Don't you dare call it the wuhan virus" - Some Bureaucratic asshole from Beijing.

"Don't you dare call it the wuhan virus" - Limp-Wristed Race-hustlers in western media.

Lining up the excuses should it all go south . Blame China , " look its even named after them " . The numbers are quite scary when you look at them and I don't know how a private only healthcare system is going to cope . Your only as strong as your weakest citizen and all that . The US does have geography on its side though which may be of help .

But its not the flu and the infection is faster amongst adults right? So why stick to the flu model?
I ll repeat (informations from inside that are confirmef by various studies) but COVID19 is not an influenza virus. It is less susceptible to UV rays so dont show any flu like seasonality feature.

the US are probably more screwed than what they think and than europeans.
Higher proportion of population with preexisting conditions like diabetis, cardiac issues etc....

Logical, if our health services are keeping people going.

of course, once this ends, add 6 months, and you will have the same number if dead as you would have had without the virus.

Nope
Let's take for example diabetis
Around 10% (40 millions) of US population is affected, 3% in France.
This was a gravity condition in 6 to 10% of coronavirus deaths.
While with proper medication you can live with diabetis until very late, here there is a risk of anticipated death for 2 million of americans (expected 50 % of whole population affected so 20 millions of diabetic with 10% at most of mortality amongst them)
This is a calculation on the shelf it would be probably less bur what is sure is that people with diabetis could and will die of viral infection when they could have survived fir years even with their preexisting condition.
It is a metric known as YLL or years of life lost.

Daft question CR but do the parades take place on the day or the nearest weekend ?
In recent years they have taken place on the weekend before the 17th if it falls outside of a weekend, reason being so as not to disrupt work for the majority.

looks like Dublin is now to cancel as well :- https://www.thesun.ie/news/5184417/...cebook&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1583765200

With regards Lent (40 days fasting for Easter) every weekend through it people went on the gargle, they did a few extra days fasting at the end of the 40 days to cover their indulgence, Catholic Church approval by the way!!

Panic selling on the markets. Must be some really broke traders by now. Range Rover half price.

Humorous panic buying beans and rice, they were more astute than given credit.

Everyone has to eat and work though or they will welcome back the dark ages with these lockdowns. Its appearing all over the map regardless.

Not the flu but without testing pretty tough to tell the difference. Is corona more ‘ severe’? Possibly, but the flu kills tens of thousands in the US every year. In any event, treatment is the same, all symptomatic at this point. So it’s a distinction without much of a difference that I can see. WHO claims corona is easier to contain, idk. As far as the ‘season’ is concerned I think having the little self propelled petri dishes known as ‘children’ out of school and more people out and about that should result in less likelihood of transmission than having everyone cooped up together indoors regardless of the contagion.

BUY BUY BUY!!! Seriously, great sale going on at Wall Street! May not be able to time the exact bottom, but selling? Absolute worst thing to do now.

Schools and Universities will remain closed in Madrid for the next 15 days.
Here we go...

Im supposed to go back home in 2 days, but I have the feeling that they are going to start closing airports.
My deployment period was already extended for an additional week. Im not sure it wont happen again, but this time without a clear return day. :(

Chinese lockdowns have probably halved manufacturing output by now. The graph is precipitous with no equivalent. Apply the same result wherever it is now currently recorded.

China with all its state control measures available didn't stop it at all in Wuhan.
I love graphs where the baseline is not zero.

it fell from 50 to 34, a 30% fall, sure, pretty bad, but the graph looks like from 50 to 5.

and sounds like they are coming back on line. So mcdonalds are not going to run out of happy meal toys...
