It's curious you'd say this as I was just returning to this thread to make a concession: You could argue against my theory by pointing at Boris Johnson. The current Tories' leadership has copied a page or two out of populism's book, but they do dare to be ideological again. If Johnson stands by his pledge not to cooperate with Farage but delivers Brexit, he could be able to eliminate his only right-wing rival.

That's kind of exactly what he s doing muck . His big problem is that he's also trying to mirror corbyn's policies . Something's got to give though , under immense scrutiny it's going to be very hard to sell himself as all men to all people .

Just out of interest mokordo , what's on offer ? What are the major parties offering to try and gather votes or is it a case of them merely re arranging the furniture and hoping no one notices ?

Real offers are in secondary level, today´s politics operates more in the emotional level. In the sentimental plane, problems in Cataluña would give more votes to the right, and the fear of "fascism" would stimulate left votes.

In the rational arguments level the right side usually offers measures in economy and more security, and left offers social improvements. Right, economic liberalism , tax reductions and left economic protectionism and higer taxes , specially for richs and big enterprises.

That´s of course a simplification, offers include a lot of issues as inmigration, rural depopulation, a recentralization of state, more control over Catalonia, feminism, gender violence, green re- industralization...

Oh, this is going to be interesting. If my reading of the exit polls is correct, both the Left and Far-Left as well as the Right and Far-Right could form a government each, whereas the PSOE has gained a narrow lead.

Am I correct to assume the King must give the task to form a government to the election winner? Or is it a matter of first come, first served?

Well, we have a stalemate, again :/ None of the blocks is going to have enough votes at the Parliament to form a viable government without the separatists parties. If PSOE and PP aren´t able to form some kind of "Gran Coalición" we will be discussing soon the next Spanish General Elections

The King gives the task to form a government to the election winner, but the winner can decline the task if he lacks enough support (something Mariano Rajoy did back in the day).

National parties:

PSOE 120 seats, 28,07%
PP 88 seats 20,79%
VOX 52 seats 15,12%
PODEMOS 35 seats, 12,81%
CIUDADANOS 10 seats, 6,79%
MÁS PAÍS 3 seats, 2,30%

Main regionalist/nationalist/independentist parties(due to D´Hont law, they obtain more seats with less votes):

ERC 13 seats 3,59%
PNV 7 seats 1,65%
JxCAT 8 seats, 2,18%
BILDU 5 seats, 1,21%
CUP 2 seats, 1,01%
NA+ 2 seats, 0,42%

More or less the same situation , I don´t know what they will do. Ciudadanos practically dissapears and VOX impressive rise are main differences.

I could see some people arguing over the rise of the right-wing parties. Some said that it's down to taking African immigrants by Spain, while others said that's because the socialist governement was not heavy-handed enough towards protestors in Catalonia.

Mix of those ingredients plus a good number of people being bored of PC bullshit in many other subjects (feminism, decentralization, subsidies to political followers,...)
