Politics The COVID-19 pandemic news and discussion.

Uptick here in San Francisco. We have been stable for a few days with about 25 new cases daily and no death, but unfortunately, the virus got into massive government run senior and persons with disabilities facility. So, the worst news are expected to come from that location.

8:50 a.m. San Francisco announces another coronavirus death, 37 new cases: A seventh person in San Francisco died of coronavirus while 37 new cases were confirmed, increasing the total in the city and county to 434, according to the Department of Public Health.

Apparently same wet market has been reopened with security there to prevent people taking pictures. Its cultural.

That's totally expectable. For me this is not mutual finger-pointing. It's way more, seriously dangerous stuff as can be seen now. If nobody is willing to learn, remember and act with hindsight we are up for more dangers in the future. I think this crisis really exposes a lot of incompetence and strategic mistakes. These mistakes are criticized since a long time. Let's wait if our leaders learn from it once this is over, or if they just forget and continue as usual.

And the CCP is the master at that for the moment, you can't ignore reality and bend it to suit your agenda. Only more harm will result.

It is so annoyinh to read always the same clichés :yada yada chinese lied to us, that's their fault. Punny little yellows men doublew of damn commirs cockroaches. Remind me ww2 antijapanses racism coming back
The chinese didnt lied : they built several giant hospitals that where mocked here in the way that they will crumble in days bevause of lack of CQ

They quarantine stricly (unlike here) 60 million of persons with a string regional, local, down to the street and building level. With layers of control at each street crossing. But it was mocked as look, dictatorship

They cancelled chinese NY. No need to be very teached in chinese social meaning to understanding what means forbidding the only holiday period of the year when families join means

They closed factories. Knowing what it means for an economy based on production and export, this is telling

They injected in the Hubei province 40 000 nurses, doctors and medical staff and recalled military NrBC units.

All that was not hidden and seen on tv press and social medias.

Any body with 2 synapses linked should have seen it was serious.
A bunch of analysts here should then shut up on this board
A bunch of analysts in ontelligence agencues should be fired.

The whole yada yada Chinabad mantra from some members look only a way to find a scapegoat for the bad managemrnt of the issue in THEIR country. Maybe pointing the complacent little idiots that said, no need to kill the economy, it is just a little flu would be more appropriate
J

I think you can read things on two levels:

1) as you say, they shut down their entire country turned away people trying to flee, built a huge hospital in record time...one should say that they are taking it very seriously.

2) the other level is that their numbers are now unbelievable. They are not that good in containment. They probably had way more deaths than advertised, saw that it was extremely easy to transmit...but did´nt say anything probably for a mix of internal reasons (chinese empires topple with these kinds of events) and also for external reasons that they did not want to be isolated by other countries

The question is this one, and I believe it is serious: did we have intelligence reports? Anyone...anyone???Apparently a Polish intelligence officer said it was serious, but anything else? I know our ressources are heavily oriented towards the threat of the time: the Muslims, but this kind of information is also what foreign intelligence is about.

With friends with that, who needs ennemies ?

[…]

"The order with payment has been made, that is to say that the masks are manufactured and pending in China, assured the elected official. The difficulty we face is the routing. […] This morning on the tarmac [at the airport], in China, a French order was bought by the Americans in cash, and the plane which was to come to France went directly to the United States.

[…]

Awaiting the usual "it's business, baby" .....
Personally, these frustrating events make me more angry at the Chinese than at the American authorities. The Americans do what their people is entitled to expect from them (further their interests at all costs), but giving what you've described, the Chinese are abusing their quasi-monopoly for sheer profit right now. They should make deliveres on a first come, first served basis.

The real problem is all was outsourced hence this situation. We also do not produce enough pharmaceutical products. And things are not really cheaper in the long run.

Masks and stuff are overrated after all, at least some experts told so yesterday evening on German TV. They even lead to more infections you know :)

The real deal is there aren't any because all outsourced for the quick buck of importers and retailers.

Strangely even India is short of gear. Over a billion people at competitive wages and barely a manufacturer of masks and other PPE to spare.
While clothing production is generally broad eg under amour seems to have a factory in every country , health PPE gear is obviously too dependent.
Have to wonder why?

Maybe also because Asians wear masks all the time, it´s a big market and you manufacture near where you sell. Not saying it´s only that but I think it counts too.

Andrew Cuomo eloquently describing the pitfalls of the free market when you really need something.
Well, speaking from one of the other 49 States, New York doesn’t get every goddamn thing it wants by screaming and shouting. We need that sh*t too.

well, clearly it cant be my fault, I just have to point at someone else....

As long as it stays at mutual finger pointing, I hope no-one is dumb enough to escalate it beyond that.

Sure China made some Fcuk ups, so did the rest of the world. Now China I think tries to help, and I'm sure once millions of masks etc turn up in UK, we will be past the worst, and will gift them onto the poorer countries. I'm also sure China will improve their market hygiene....maybe get some help in from WHO to monitor.

In the UK the politicians have been fairly good at working together. That may change once the peak passes. Overall my view is that so far, the UK gov has done ok.

I would seriously take everything coming out of China with over-dose of skepticism.

China has a serious track record in term of censorship, lack of transparency, disinformation and repression. Not that there is a single country that could possibly praise itself of being the exact and absolute opposite; but in term of reliability? Second guessing might be the soundest thing to do.

Now, is China is trying to improve the situation?
Abroad: yes. That is based on the supplies sent to various countries, though a lot of it had to be sent back because it was faulty (ie. the masks knowingly made by a company not accredited to make them).
At home: yes? Apparently? At least I hope so. The CCP said various things, among which it had now managed to reduce the infection rate to 0. Considering the amount of lies previously told by the ChiCom... it should take more than their words to convince anybody.

China remains a country nurturing Soviet Union mentality: its power comes from the perception of its power, and being humiliated is the last thing it can afford to happen.

Goats are great at cutting grass.
Better than horses and much better than cows.

Plant a picket in your garden, tie a goat to it, move the picket every day. At the end of the week your garden is done.

Still good news piling up

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that the global coronavirus pandemic may trigger a “looming food crisis.”

While emphasizing that disruptions to the food supply are currently “minimal” and that “there is no need for the world to panic,” the FAO said that the global food system is likely to be affected over the next several weeks by the impacts of the COVID-19.

“We risk a looming food crisis unless measures are taken fast to protect the most vulnerable, keep global food supply chains alive and mitigate the pandemic’s impacts across the food system,” the agency wrote on its website.

The FAO said that border closures and disruptions to global trade are already creating logistical bottlenecks and that quarantines and shelter-in-place ordinances are keeping farmers and food processors from processing agricultural products, particularly fruits and vegetables. Shortages of farming inputs like fertilizers and veterinary medicines can further impact food production. All of these factors are likely to cause “disruptions in the food supply chains” in April and May.

‘A food security timebomb’

The agency warned that “the consequences could be drastic” if the number of COVID-19 cases were to rapidly increase in the 53 countries that are home to more than 113 million people who already face severe food insecurity. The pandemic could prove particularly catastrophic in those areas that are already hit by other food-related crises, like the countries in sub-Saharan Africa that are contending with vast swarms of desert locusts that are devouring crops and threatening food security.

The good thing is they really like to eat weeds, the bad thing is they put Houdini to shame.

Edit: they always like your neighbor garden better then yours.

Reports made COVID-19 Testing kits from China 25% of them are rated as usable, the rest fail to do what it says on the box.
Various Masks, are poor quality if not downright unusable, after delivery rejected by Spain, Italy, Holland (that is known about.)
Be wary of little men bearing gifts from the Far east.

How do masks made in Spain, Italy, Holland compare by usefulness in real numbers?

Hold up a minute, context is everything. The fact of the matter is surgical masks don't protect you from contracting anything. They're designed to protect others from being directly exposed to the contents of the wearer's mouth, if you will.

In that function – if everyone wore one – they could make a small contribution to the lowering of the secondary infection rate. But they're compromised in that regard by the average wearer's behaviour, who erroneously trusts in being protected by the mask, disregards social distancing rules and oftentimes doesn't even wear the mask correctly.

You'd have to go through several masks a day if you were to do it right, for instance. Wearing a mask while outside is likewise not necessary.

Considering all the cons and the waste of resources due to popular ignorance, it's safe to say the masks are more urgently needed elsewhere. Doctor's receptionists, pharmacists, caretakers in retirement homes – they require those masks way more than the general public now.

The same is true for higher rated protective equipment (>FFP2). Us ordinary folks have no business sitting on those things.

No "expert" that I've ever watched being interviewed has said otherwise. It's just the media being desparate to create drama and find contradictions where there are none (journalists have never understood the meaning of 'scientific consensus'). Sadly, no one buys a newspaper that's titled 'We'll be fine'.

?

Oh, speaking of FFP2 masks… I actually got sent one by my health insurance provider. Like out of nowhere, really. Apparently, they'd looked at my patient record and deemed me a member of a risk group – I don't even know why. I'll donate it to the hospital tomorrow; it's on my way to work anyway.

CDC Director Reacts to Resurfaced Tape of Fauci Downplaying Virus Threat

CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield called in to the Brian Kilmeade Show to discuss the nation's progress in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Among the topics discussed was unearthed audio of White House Coronavirus Task Force member and NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci from January 26th assuring Americans that the coronavirus is nothing to worry about.

"The American people should not be worried or frightened by this. It's a very, very low risk to the United States," Dr. Fauci said on The CATS Roundtable. "It isn't something that the American public needs to worry about or be frightened about."

Director Redfield agreed with Dr. Fauci's assessment, saying that at that time in January the information coming out of China suggested "they were pretty certain that this was not transmitted human to human."

The point is China is sending out hundreds of thousands of items that are defective, they are not donating them for free, either for cash or currying favors post COVID-19 Pandemic when they want to trade world wide.

Don't worry I don't believe everything I see, I'm inherently skeptical, to the point of, could they lie, yes, is there a benefit to them to lie, yes. So almost certainly to an unknown % they lied. Most politicians lie - usually when their mouths are moving.
