Politics The COVID-19 pandemic news and discussion.

The Black Plague was not helped by plane travel ;)
...

Spanish Flu didn't give a s*** about us not flying anywhere either.

Obsessive Chinese secrecy has played the largest part in casuing the panic due to an initial lack of information and a lack of trust about the information that was eventually released.

I very much doubt that the western world will see death rates approaching that reported from China.

Cases have been reported in the following continents:
  • Africa: Egypt (1).
  • Asia: China (77 658), Hong Kong (81), Macao (10), South Korea (893), Japan (144), Singapore (90), Iran (61), Thailand (37), Taiwan (30), Malaysia (22), Vietnam (16), the United Arab Emirates (13), Kuwait (5), India (3), the Philippines (3), Bahrain (2), Israel (2), Oman (2), Afghanistan (1), Iraq (1), Cambodia (1), Nepal (1), Sri Lanka (1), and Lebanon (1).
  • America: the United States (53) and Canada (11).
  • Europe: Italy (229), Germany (16), the United Kingdom (13), France (12), Spain (3), Russia (2), Belgium (1), Finland (1), and Sweden (1).
  • Oceania: Australia (22).
  • Other: Cases on an international conveyance (Japan) (691).

Any breakdown on the demographics? Age, etc? We've had 31 deaths in my State so far this flu season, population 6.5 million. Those deaths are almost always the sick and elderly, nursing homes and so on.

Great stuff, thanks! This is pretty much as expected. Healthy relatively young patients have a 99.8 % recovery rate. Over the age of 80? No green bananas for you...

It depends of the number of cases. Less than few hundred and ICUs can manage
Past that and the health system will be saturated (like it was in the Hubei province) which will increase casualties
It is all a matter of means and numbers ....

As of today in Romania.

2,077 persons isolated at home.
33 persons isolated in hospital.
32 biological tests waiting to be confirmed or cleared of COVID-19.

At this time of year the normal influenza kills people mainly elderly with a death toll of some 27 persons,
mainly elderly, with medical issues such as weal hearts or respiratory issues.

yeah but the most affected is the aviation industry, as countries close off its their routes dying. I can see some tanking because of this.

Lufthansa already suspended training for flight attendants and will review the aspirants contracts. They will make an announcment in mid march.
My wife which works for LH had inter European flights last week also with a layover in Milan, today our daughter (8yo) was sick with coughing and unusual high fever. My wife had called the doctor and they advised her to call the district office, after quite a while she was able to reach somebody on the phone.
The district office doctor told her not to worry as she would be sick also and earlier than our daughter. I find this strange as I remember having read somewhere that people can very well be asymptomatic. I suspect them not having enough test kits (or we are hysterical but with her job I think not).

Meanwhile a 47 yo man from northern Germany is in critical condition but it seems he had a condition before.
Also a nursery school teacher is infected and various Schools and public offices closed.

Woman in Helsinki tests positive for novel coronavirus

The Finnish female who tested positive for Covid-19 has a fever but is in good condition, hospital officials say.

A Finnish woman has tested positive for novel coronavirus, officials at Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) said early Wednesday evening.

The patient, described as a woman of working age, was likely exposed to the virus during a trip to northern Italy's city of Milan, according to the hospital.

I'm watching press conference, apparently she was in contact with only two people and they are "under control". However I doubt she teleported to her home from Milan.

Last case was in Lapland, remote location, while this is in capital.

1st confirmed case in Romania, Gorj County a Romanian has been quarantined in Hospital after testing positive for the virus, ironically he caught it from a visiting 71 year old Italian hunter who came to Romania during 18-22 February, and who since his return to Italy has tested positive and hospitalized. The Romanian lived at home with 5 family members they now are being tested, anybody else who might have come into contact with the Italian are being sought and checked.
