Russia is refurbishing the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov?
The ship is to be back in service in 2021. I cannot understand why they would even bother, she is in terrible shape with major, major issues

From another site:
1 ) Well, new dry dock (I may be not using correct terms, not a naval guy, heh) is being constructed out of two smaller ones. It had to be done for years, nobody just gave a S**t and whoops, now you have the time and a "motivator" stuffed deep inside your ass.
2) Repair will feature "forced" updates, when you simply dont have old stuff anymore and have to set up something new.
3) Airwing will be 'whatever left' - repaired and updated Su-33 and MiG-29K, though they might have enhancement soon.
The ONLY, O-N-L-Y purpose of this abhorrence - keep the school, we have less aircraft-carrier certified pilots than cosmonauts.
About new carrier - Fleet is afraid to make a move, but funds third-rate carrier related (multi-purpose) R&D. People who monitor patents see, that carrier related-stuff like "control system", "engagement planning and data presentation suites" which directly mention carrier basing are being registered.
==============
If they managed to finally fix it (its kinda possible, all needed tech already certified, even new KVG-6 and KVG-6-1 engines are tested and proven to be pretty ok) it still can host 20-24 multirole fighters and make like 150-250 sorties (AFAIR) so for low-level insurgency fight, anti-IS ASAP help for a nation in need, hell even in sea battle of a small scale - can be useful.
UPD: the latest news on carrier-related stuff was extensive testing of CEC-like capability - horizontal and vertical seamless data sharing and streaming. So some work is being done, where its cheap and generally useful,
