That makes sense about the 10/22 with subsonics. There's no supersonic crack and almost all of the powder is burned in the barrel anyway. The can should just have to muffle the sudden pressure release of the bullet leaving the barrel. It would be great for squirrel removal, if you have squirrels in New Zealand.My suppressed AR15 was still loud as hell. Definitely needed ear protection to shoot it.
On the other hand my suppressed 10/22 firing subsonics makes almost no noise at all. It's the closest thing to the Hollywood suppressor I can think of.
As for Mr Google's claims about their use in NZ, 10's of thousands of rounds are fired suppressed for legal purposes for every one fired for illegal purposes. Crims who use firearms tend to want people to know they're being shot at.
