Politics The COVID-19 pandemic news and discussion.

Has anyone else noticed the spreading of a lustful pessismism, so to speak? Like that some people seem to think their country's death toll is part of a morbid contest, and that every positive news must be fake?

For days I've been noticing a strange desire (particularly in the British press) to call the German case fatality rate into question; it's so perplexing. When I as a German had become aware of the hopeful signs from South Korea, I drew comfort from them.

And now the intarwebs are being flooded with people who're dead-certain there'll never be a vaccine against Covid-19, for some reason.
Don’t sweat the U.K. interest, it’s purely so the press can tell us Boris is getting it wrong.

How is the PM? He's had it for a week now, this seems to be the time when either you stabilize and will get rid of it or develop complications.

Out of curiosity, what British press are you reading?

I wondered that myself, because I can't say I've noticed that.

Don't actually doubt what he's saying but am just inclined to wonder if it's maybe the gutter end of the press.

Being really honest, I'm not watching or reading a whole lot of the news because it does me no good - after I've read all the doom and gloom I'll still just be stuck in the house worrying about my parents catching it. It's why I'm not coming into this thread an awful lot too.

He has been on twitter last night, he is walking and talking. I still think I had it, and only now 3 weeks later, have I fully recovered.

There is getting some noise about a case of "being a dick": the US are said to have bought, in cash, a stock of masks that was supposed to be shipped to France. The "transaction" has apparently been done in front of the plane, but the details and "sourcing" of this incident appear to be a bit flimsy.

Anyway, let us suppose this is indeed true and that indeed happened: masks got hijacked.
Though one could debate who is the biggest dick: the US guys for buying the masks? Or the Chinese guys for accepting to sell it for more money?

Now, where it gets interesting: France, invoking its requisition rights in time of crisis, "seized" 4 million masks belonging to a Swedish company (bought from China), transiting through France, half of which being on their way to Spain and Italy.

So, on the one hand we have "evil americanz hijacked our masks" and on the other "we seized masks transiting on our territory because we can".
Pot calling the kettle black.

Russia. Report on 02 April.
3548 total cases (771 new, 595 of them in Moscow), 30 dead (6 new), 235 recovered (45 new).

Today Putin's address was announced on current situation with COVID. Probably lockdown will prolonged for one more week.

Everyone's at it Ivan but from the states point of view it's doing its job . 100% agree , no point finger pointing ...

U.S. Purchase of Needed Supplies from Russia
The United States is committed to the global fight against COVID-19. We are a generous and reliable contributor to crisis response and humanitarian action across the world, but we cannot do it alone. The countries of the G20 agreed last week to work together to defeat the coronavirus, and we are working closely with these countries and others to ensure that critically needed supplies get to those in need.

As a follow-up to the March 30 phone call between President Trump and President Putin, the United States has agreed to purchase needed medical supplies, including ventilators and personal protection equipment, from Russia, which were handed over to FEMA on April 1 in New York City.

Both countries have provided humanitarian assistance to each other in times of crisis in the past and will no doubt do so again in the future. This is a time to work together to overcome a common enemy that threatens the lives of all of us.

The research identified a wide range of structural conditions due to the coronavirus pandemic including overcrowding and precarious housing making self-isolation more difficult, unemployment, increased care work – which predominantly falls on the shoulders of women – and critical services and needs being put at risk as governments prioritise their response to coronavirus.

They also recommend broadening bailout and stimulus packages to prioritise those most at risk, making policy responses cross-sectoral and committing to leadership diversity: pointing out that, to date, policy making has been dominated by white, Christian, cis-gendered, heterosexual, able-bodied wealthy men.

Covid is sexist and women are the main victims.

Ah yes, absolutely.

But the "holier than thou", virtue signaling, hypocritical knee-jerking is so... "not unexpected".

I bet is/will be a common sight in Europe.

Hospitals in Helsinki bring in containers to store dead bodies.

But there's positive news, it's possible the restrictions are working:
Papers on Thursday are again dominated by coronavirus as they have been in recent weeks. Finland’s response is in the spotlight, with Iltalehti reporting that an expert from the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) reckons the infection rate in Finland is now below R1.

The ‘R0’ level explains how fast the disease is spreading, by indicating the average number of people infected by each infected patient.

Tuija Leino tells IL that there is a time lag in the daily coronavirus numbers, which have declined in Finland since Saturday.

Well, this brings memories (or should I stay nightmares?) of Chernobyl for me. Political machinations shouldn't detract from heroism and professionalism of the "Russian expeditionary force" which members stepped up through no will of their own.

But in one case, the masks were released after enquiry (much like the italian masks on the czech border)
On the other they were not
Conveniently omitted by our resident self hating "frenchy ?" troll
