Certainly. The author also mentions this. Further evidence the German Navy would like to jump on the opportunity and drop their old design philosophy* is given by TKMS. Their runner-up proposal for the F126 programme should've been an obvious alternative in the current situation; but they've already said they can't build that ship due to "newly requested changes".

There's one aspect still tying the Germans to the old standard, though, and that's software and sensors. Currently, the German Navy uses no fewer than four different battle management systems and as many main sensor suites. Reducing that number to two was a major goal of the old policies. There's no reducing that, at least not in a timely manner, with a MEKO.

The Royal Netherlands Navy has temporarily acquired a patrol vessel. The DSS Galatea was officially transferred from Damen Shipyards to the Ministry of Defence today in Den Helder.

The newest addition will patrol the North Sea. There, it will increase situational awareness and serve as a deterrent.

The Ministry of Defence is leasing the civilian ship in anticipation of two multifunctional support vessels, which are expected to arrive in 2027.

Special Contracting Arrangement

Thanks to a special contracting arrangement, the so-called "ship of state" is authorized to detect, escort, guide, and monitor.

The Galatea's crew consists of civilians from the Dutch company Fugro, which specializes in, among other things, soil surveys. The civilian crew may be supplemented by military personnel from the navy. This varies depending on the deployment. Scaling up is possible if necessary. The ship can call upon vessels from the navy or other defense units.

Space for other tasks

With the arrival of the Galatea, the naval vessels will have more space for other tasks. This allows the Ministry of Defence to deploy the units more efficiently and effectively with a view to main task 1: the possible defense of NATO territory. Given the increased threat, this is not an unnecessary luxury. For example, the MIVD (Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service) has been warning for several years that Russia is secretly mapping vital infrastructure in the North Sea.

The North Sea Infrastructure Protection Programme (PBNI) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has made funding available for the Galatea.

Germany will order approximately 131,100 more G95 assault rifles and indicates further orders for 500,000 in total. (Source)

The German government has passed a bill today aimed at speeding up military procurement programmes. All military needs, including construction and daily necessities, are to be exempt from European public procurement law and German climate protection laws. Contracts for urgent projects can be awarded without prior parliamentary approval [!] and without open tenders. Companies from outside the EU can be excluded from bidding at any time. If a bidder appeals against the outcome of a public tender on grounds of fair competition laws, the procurement process will continue regardless. (Source)

That's stunningly restrictive for a parliamentary republic.

I think H&K has just had a stroke😏

Civil part of Rostock Laage to be sold, which means a new leasing contract, which means the BMVG is reviewing a possible expansion of the military part. This could very well mean the end of civil usage. Nothing decided yet but i think this would be huge.

Rostock Laage houses TaktLwG73 which trains all German and Austrian Eurofighter Pilots. The airbase is also home of the German Air Force Weapons School.

The Netherlands has also bought at least two small civilian airports for use as helicopter landing sites and possibly operate drones.

Lelystad Airport, originally built to offload pressure from Schiphol Airport, but which never operated due to complaints and legal injunctions from locals and NGOs is intended to operate F-35s, possibly a fourth squadron.

lol...thats what i thought.

Something like that would never happen a few kilometers to the east within our borders.

Altough....well...I can't find it anymore but with this weeks law for fast paced military procurement i feel like i have read sth. about easing regulations regarding conversion of properties for military use, like environmental standards and stuff...and this especially for airfields.

Can you imagine seeing some of the old and closed airfields (which aren't converted or covered with solar power already) in action again?

Did you read it here, by any chance? 😉

mh...possible. 😅

It seems the part about the changes of the aviation act aren't mentioned in most news outlets. At least not with these clear words.

But instead of hundreds of take-offs and landings a week they'll get a couple of dozen at most.

An army base in Budel was deactivated decades ago and converted to an asylum centre. For "families of course" which naturally turned out to be exclusively unaccompanied high testosterone boys and males with cultural differences as to the definition of "property", paying for things, defending the family honour and the meaning of the phrase "no means no". The local council made the mistake of offering the population to revert it back to a military base just to prove that people were actually happy with the current situation. Because obviously the people would want to be on the right side of history instead of housing those nasty warmongers.

So from 2028 it will be a military base again with overwhelming local support🤣
