I actually think its past plays a role. Germany sitting this one out or being on the "sane" side could put it in a position where it is needed by both sides. Positioning it as a peace dealer or at least the neautral seat in the house that everyone can talk to will pay dividennds down the line. EU/NATO needs Germany as one of the key members and Russia as its mediator with enough weight to make others listen. If they can pull it off there will be opportunity for it to totally forget or burn the shadow of its past.
This is going against the media narrative of a united front and thats why some tabloids and members are foaming at the mouth against what Germany is doing.
What the Brits are doing though valiant is of not much help. IF, big if, the Russians were to make a move, all those missiles dumped will just end up in the black market and wont make the Russians second guess their actions. Until NATO or the WEST puts boots on the ground, its not a deterrence. Oh by boots I mean, actual numbers, numbers that cant be picked up in a matter of hours by a couple of C17s, meaning they will have to fight.
The western forces, left people hang out to dry in Syria, Afghanistan... I'm guessing someone is betting they would do the same here.
