On the issue of cavalry on the Soviet-German front during World War II.

On February 18, 1897, an outstanding Soviet military leader, Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel-General Pavel Alekseevich Belov was born in Shuya of the Vladimir province (now in the Ivanovo region). Graduated from the city school. He worked as a weigher, timekeeper, telegraph operator at the Ivanovo-Voznesensk railway station. Since 1916 in the Russian Imperial Army, a participant in the First World War, a private in a hussar regiment. At the end of 1917 - a cadet, a student of the 2nd Kiev school of ensigns. In the Red Army since 1918. In 1918 he was an instructor at the regional branch of Vsevobuch in the city of Ivanovo-Voznesensk. From July 1919 he took part in the Civil War: he commanded a cavalry platoon, squadron, was assistant commander of the 82nd regiment of the 14th division.

In 1922-1926 he was the commander of the 81st Cavalry Regiment. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1925. In 1927, he graduated from the cavalry refresher courses for senior command personnel, and in the same year was appointed commander of a separate cavalry squadron. Since 1930 - assistant chief of the headquarters of the Moscow Military District. Since June 1931, he was appointed for special assignments with a member of the USSR Revolutionary Military Council S.M. Budyonn, since September 1932 - assistant inspector of the Red Army cavalry. In 1933 he graduated from the Military Academy of the Red Army named after M.V. Frunze, after which, from 1934, he served as an assistant commander, and then as a commander of the 7th Samara Cavalry Division. From July 1937 - chief of staff of a cavalry corps, from October 1940 - commander of a mountain rifle division. Member of the campaign of Soviet troops in Western Ukraine in September 1939. Commander of the 2nd Cavalry Corps in March 1941.

With the beginning of World War II, Belov's 2nd Cavalry Corps took part in the battles on the Southern Front to hold the border line in the Tiraspol region. The corps under his command fought against the 11th German and 4th Romanian divisions near Chisinau, Balti, Kotovsk, repulsed the blow of the 50th German and 5th Romanian infantry divisions near Orhei in July. He fought from the border to Kiev, transferred to the Southwestern Front.

During the Kiev operation, Belov's corps fought fierce battles in the area of the cities of Romny and Shtepovka. For 5 days of fighting, the Nazis lost up to 8 thousand killed, 20 tanks, 150 guns, about 100 vehicles and other weapons. For this operation, the corps commander was awarded the Order of Lenin. The corps was transferred to the defense of Moscow.

From November 1941 he took part in the Battle of Moscow on the Western Front. The merits of the corps and its commander in the Moscow battle can hardly be called anything other than exceptional. Almost single-handedly, corps units repulsed the blow of the main forces of Guderian's 2nd Panzer Group on Moscow in the south near Kashira. For distinction in defensive battles in the summer and autumn of 1941, on November 26, 1941, the corps was awarded the title of the Guards, becoming the 1st Guards Cavalry Corps. In the counteroffensive and the general offensive in the western direction, Belov's horsemen distinguished themselves more than once in battles, in January 1942 they broke through the front and made a deep raid along the enemy rear, and then for more than 5 months, being surrounded, they fought in the enemy rear.

Since June 1942 P.A. Belov is the commander of the 61st Army. A participant in the summer private operations of 1942 and the Oryol offensive operation in the Battle of Kursk, where Belov's army defeated a large German grouping near the town of Bolkhov and liberated it on July 29, 1943. He showed talent as a leader in the battle for the Dnieper. In the period from September 26 to October 1, 1943, units and formations of the 61st Army crossed the Dnieper River near the village of Lyubech and seized a bridgehead on the right bank, then expanded it, freeing 21 settlements.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated January 15, 1944, the commander of the 61st Army, Lieutenant General Pavel Alekseevich Belov, was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 1578). Over the subsequent years of the Great Patriotic War, the 61st Army under the command of P.A. Belova, who was awarded the military rank of Colonel General on July 26, 1944, took part in the Kalinkovichi-Mozyr, Belarusian strategic, Baltic, Vistula-Oder, East Pomeranian and Berlin operations.

In the post-war years, Colonel-General Belov P.A. commanded the troops of the Don Military District (1945-46), the North Caucasian Military District (1946-48), the South Ural Military District (1949-55). In 1949, he graduated from the Higher Academic Courses at the Higher Military Academy named after K. E. Voroshilov (Military Academy of the General Staff). Since May 1955 P.A. Belov - Chairman of the Central Committee of DOSAAF. Retired since 1960. Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 2-5th convocations (1946-1962).

He died on December 3, 1962. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow.
