Some pics of the Chamonix PGHM. First a series of an epic rescue operations carried out by Gendarmes on July 21st 2020. After having raised a full ascent of the Mont Maudit a group of Gendarmes of the PGHM was called to the rescue of two British mountaineers who had spent five days at the Peuterey Integral. One of the alpinists had fallen into a crevasse and after having been secured by his partner he had gone into a bad case of acute altitude sickness, at the end of the day extremely heavy thunderstorms were moving in making a quick evacuation by helicopter impossible. A A night in the open at 4700m would have been fatal for the two alpinists so the foot column returning from the Mont Maudit went in. In darkness, fog and storm, they managed to get the two alpinists down to the "Refuge du Goûter" where they spent the night. The next day adverse weather still prevented the helicopter to get into the fray, so it was decided to continue the evacuation by "caravane de secours" and they started the descent each mountaineer fixed by two members of the PGHM. Finally the Helos could get in and the two British mountaineers were extracted and medevaced. This all sounds simple but this rescue is an extraordinary feat of mountain rescue! RESPECT.
