There's an effect of ICE deportations I hadn't seen coming - beef packing plants in Nebraska are now severely understaffed and production has fallen off sharply. High demand vs. low supply means prices are up - way up. Except in the very rural areas. Both local grocery stores where we shop have beef, pork & chicken for sale at prices a little higher, but nothing like the big chain stores.
Both stores here buy sides of locally raised beef from local small packing plants and process it themselves. Places like Wal-mart (I'd never buy meat there in any case), Safeway, Costco & others get their meat drop shipped.
An unexpected bonus of living in a small town of a very rural area!
Packing plants have always hired a lot of illegals. I'm not sure how they work around social security and group health issues, but obviously they had a viable plan. We had 3 packing plants right here in this county, but they all closed because the big packing plants could undersell them by sheer volume.
Ah, well another glitch in the system to be sorted.

@thelistener Well, that plan to allow (illegal?) aliens to continue to work in the USA at those jobs is new news to me. Get them visas then, Mr Trump.
As to ME? Yes, I have worked in the summer at a farm in my teenage years, hoeing beets and weeding and running irrigation..... and dishwashing and burger frying during my college years.

I saw on a news loop that the E-Verify system used to check employment status of aliens was said to be down by the company in question in Nebraska. But officials said that it was inadequate. Not sure what they meant by the latter, I assume the company did what it could to buck the system.

It appears Konstatin, (is that the Russian spelling?), got a bit over his skis. Reports are that they gave the paratroopers the choice of not being there if they didn't want to. Don't know how many or if any took that option. Not sure if that is considered "screened for loyalty".

This is the main problem from these policies.
As I understand it, Australia resolves this by ‘basic’ jobs paying a lot more than minimum wage.
That’s it. Your coffee/ cleaner/ cabbage picker is going to go up.
Everyone then needs to decide if they are ok with this result, less immigrants, prices up a bit.
Maybe we need to introduce ‘national service’ as a year of serving coffee, picking veg, picking litter, might lead to less trash, less wasted food, and better coffee…..
Alternative is constant immigration, but this to me sounds like a ponsi scheme, more healthcare, more social security, etc etc.

I've seen vids of robot food delivery in Japan. That might be problematic here. I mean a fried chicken or pizza delivery bot might not last long in certain neighborhoods.

These are basically the reactor from a nuclear sub. Sealed for life, run it for 30 years, then bury it for 300 years. NZ could lease one, then send it back.
