Vice Adm RD Katari assumed charge as the #FirstIndian Chief of the Naval Staff.
His strategic vision provided a firm push towards self-reliance & indigenisation & in formulating the blue print for the strong force the #IndianNavy has become today.
It was during his tenure (April 1958 - June 1962) that India's first aircraft carrier Vikrant was acquired, heralding a new era for the Naval Aviation and also saw the participation of Vikrant in the Naval Operations for the liberation of Goa

#IndianNavyHistory INS Bhavnagar, a minesweeper was commissioned into the #IndianNavy on 27 April 1979 at Riga in erstwhile USSR by His Excellency Shri IK Gujral, the then Ambassador of India to USSR. The ship derives her name from the port of Bhavnagar in Gujarat. The ship participated in Presidents Fleet Review on 12 February 1984 and 15 February 1989. In her illustrious career spanning over 20 years, she had taken part in numerous operations conducted by the Navy. INS Bhavnagar was decommissioned on 24 December 2009 at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai.
