What I've never quite understood is why the smoke trails of the General Electric J79 engine are so prevalent even in pictures and footage taken in an active warzone. I'd been led to believe that the ground crew could always reduce the smoke output by increasing the turbine's core temperature, but that this option would only be used in wartime since it also raises maintenance costs and reduces the engine's lifespan.
