'XV401' '1' from No.41 Squadron RAF taxiing for take-off at Luqa Malta. No. 41 superseded letters with numbers for a while. This was a refueling stop as 41 Squadron never came for 3 week's exercises.

Two F-4E Phantom II aircraft assigned to the 512th and 526th Tactical Fighter Squadrons fly one of their last aerial missions over Burg-Hollenzollern, near Ramstein Air Base. Both squadrons will replace their Phantoms with F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. Tail No. 512 is piloted by Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Bruce Gillett and navigated by Captain (CPT) Mike Craig. LTC Tom Speelman is piloting tail No. 526 with 1st Lieutenant (1LT) John Rogers navigating, 20th March, 1985
The aircraft are air-to-air heavy with four AIM-7 Sparrows and four AIM-9 Sidewinders.

One of the most decorated Airmen in Air Force history, whose career spanned three wars and four decades, has passed away.
Retired Col. George Everett "Bud" Day, an Air Force pilot, shot down during the Vietnam War and imprisoned in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" along with Sen. John McCain, defiantly resisted the North Vietnamese for more than five years and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. He passed away July 27, in Shalimar, Fla., at age 88.
