Fire erupts from an F4U Corsair after it crashed into the barrier, 8 April 1945. Gasoline from the damaged belly tank ignited when it hit the plane's hot engine. The fire was quickly extinguished by the flight deck fire fighters. Note "hot papa" in asbestos suit, in lower right. Essex was then supporting the Okinawa Invasion.

Flight deck fire fighters extinguish a burning Corsair, after it crashed on board, 8 April 1945. Fire started when gasoline from the plane's belly tank hit the hot engine. The carrier was then operating in support of the Okinawa Invasion. Note: barrier wires wrapped around the propeller hub.
