Putin has made an historic blunder, and at this point, there is no path where he comes out of this stronger than before the invasion. As the U.S. learned, the threat of force is an incredible weapon...until you use it. Putin was at the height of his power until the first Russian crossed the border and then it was all downhill.
There is no upside for him from this point on. His best option is damage control, but I am afraid he is no longer a rational actor, and therefore damage control will not be pursued, and I do not believe that his thinly veiled nuclear threat was a bluff. It remains to be seen how far down the dark path his lackeys and generals will follow him.

Really? Missed the whole Balkans thing in the 90s, did you? Every side, NATO included, bombed residential areas at some point. With or without there actually being legitimate military targets in the vicinity.
