Colonel de Castries requested in early December 1953 that a tank squadron be flown in. The 10 Chaffees were disassembled and each stripped into 180 components, flown in, and reassambled in an open-air production line beside the airstrip by 25 men of 2nd Foreign Legion Tank Repair Company (2e CREBLE, 2e Compagnie de Réparation d´Engins Blindés). It took six Dakota sorties and two by Bristol Type 170 Freighters to airlift the parts of a single M24 into DBP. The Bristol freighters were the only aircraft in Indochina which could take the hulls of the tanks, they had to be requisitioned from the civil airline Société Indochinoise de Ravitaillement. Even under the adverse conditions the légionnaires of 2e CREBLE achieved an extraordinary rate of one reassembled Chaffee every two days, the whole platoon was ready by January 1954.
The tank squadron commander was the popular 24-year-old Yves Hervouët of the 1er Régiment de Chasseurs à Cheval (1er RCC), the crews were mixed 1er RCC and Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale du Maroc (RICM), the unit was designated as 3e Escadron (de Marche), 1 RCC (3 EM/1 RCC).
