Master Chief Electrician’s Mate Mary Bonnin qualified as a USN Master Diver in 1990, the first woman to earn the Navy’s highest enlisted diving qualification.
Master Chief Bonnin earned her initial diving qualification in 1977, graduating from Norfolk's diving school as a Second Class Diver and at the top of her class as the "Honor Man." In 1982, she qualified as a First Class Diver, becoming the first female enlisted diver certified in both air and mixed gas diving. Bonnin made chief soon after and began planning her path to taking the Master Diver evaluation.
She secured that opportunity in 1990 and successfully qualified as the Navy’s first female Master Diver. Her evaluation board, which had more than 140 years of diving experience, unanimously passed her, quelling any questions about whether her gender factored into the decision.
Master Chief Bonnin served six years a Master Diver before retiring in 1996 with 20 years of service.
