In 1915 - British nurse Edith Cavell was executed by a German firing squad in Brussels for helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I.

In 1945 - Private First Class Desmond T. Ross, of Lynchburg, Virginia, was presented the Congressional Medal of Honour for outstanding bravery as a medical corpsman. Ironically, Ross had registered as a conscientious objector upon entering the service.
