The Turkish Space Agency (Turkish: Türkiye Uzay Ajansı, TUA) is a government agency for national aerospace research in Turkey. It was formally established by a presidential decree on 12 December 2018. Headquartered in Ankara, the agency is subordinated to the Ministry of Science and Technology. With the establishment of TUA((Turkish: Türkiye Uzay Ajansı, TUA), the Department for Aviation and Space Technologies at the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure was abolished. TUA will prepare strategic plans that include medium and long-term objectives, basic principles and approaches, objectives and priorities, performance measures, methods to be followed and resource allocation for aerospace science and technologies. TUA works in close relation with the TÜBİTAK Space Technologies Research Institute (TÜBİTAK UZAY). It is administrated by an executive board of seven members. The tenure of board members, the chairperson excluded, is three years.

Turkish team to send mini satellite into space
1604899427414.png

A team of Turkish engineering students will send a miniaturized satellite into space at the end of the year.

“We started working on the PocketQube in 2016, a newly developed standard in space technologies, and developed Turkey's first PocketQube satellite Grizu-263A,” Aytaç Dursun, head of Grizu-263 Space Team, told Anadolu Agency.

“The satellite will be sent into space in December with SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex in the U.S.,” he said.

Established in 2016 by Bülent Ecevit University students in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak, Grizu-263 aims to work on space and satellite technologies and participate in international competitions.

“These are very exciting developments for us. A journey from Zonguldak to space,” said Dursun.

The team was named after a firedamp explosion in a mine in the Kozlu district in 1992, which led to the deaths of 263 miners. Firedamp is grizu in Turkish.

The team head said PocketQubes minimize launch costs of rockets and production time as well as damage a satellite could receive, giving the producer an advantage in space technologies.

“Also, since we have produced our satellite completely by ourselves, it will be a great gain and innovation for us. We shrink the technology and fit it into a 5x5x5cm [2x2x2inch] satellite,” he said.

“The most important gain of this satellite and our project in terms of our country is that undergraduate students can send a satellite into space by completing a space project. In this way, we will be able to adapt to the space projects of our country much more easily.

“The realization and completion of such a large project by a group of undergraduate students will provide fully trained manpower for our country,” he said.

Road to international success

In its first year, the eight-person team took part in the CanSat model satellite competition held by the American Astronautical Society in the U.S., sponsored by NASA, Lockheed Martin, Kratos Space, Praxis Inc, Siemens, and U.S.
Naval Research Laboratory.

Grizu-263 placed 25th among 96 teams in the competition that is considered the most prestigious student competition globally in the model satellite field.

“We gained a lot of experience in the competition process and we have gained valuable outcomes for the coming years,” Dursun said.

In light of the experiences gained in the U.S., the team was recreated with an institutional structure.

“We started recruiting members of our team through an online application form and accepting into the team after a project and interview. In this way, friends who are eager to work in space and satellite joined us. Now we are a 15-person team,” he said.

In their second try at CanSat, Grizu-263 finished second.

“On the day of the award ceremony, there was a high expectation on the team,” he said.

“We were sure that we would be in the top five, and we completed the competition claiming the second place,” Dursun said.

“We were so proud to have achieved such great success for us as students from an Anatolian university. We saw this success as a milestone and have always continued to work harder for our biggest project,” he added.

Sustainable achievement

Last year, Grizu-263 participated in the same contest with a different task.

“Our main goal was to have sustainability in success. The second place we achieved for the second time showed that our success was not a coincidence,” said Dursun.

The team completed the 2020 CanSat Competition but placed fourth. In addition to CanSat, the team created a unit with some members for Teknofest Turksat Model Satellite Competition in Turkey.

“We completed seven stages of the competition under the mission created by Turksat engineers and came first in Turkey. We received our reward at Teknofest from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,” said Dursun.

“With these four ranks in three years, we have proven our sustainable success mission,” he added.

Dursun recommended all space technology enthusiasts who are willing to work in this field “to be process-oriented, not result-oriented.”

“Regardless of the outcome, the work they do will shape their future. Therefore, to realize their dreams, they have to continue their work without giving up,” he added.

Dursun said the team wants to take part in Turkey's major projects to strengthen Turkish technology.

“Meantime, we always felt the support of our state, especially our university, financially and morally. In return for this support, we will continue to proudly represent our country in the international arena in space technologies and gain new successes,” he said.

Turkey to launch communications satellite in November

The Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Ministry will launch Turkey’s new Türksat 5A communications satellite on Nov. 30, following the satellite’s delivery by the French company Airbus on Oct. 2, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu announced the news at a model satellite competition at the Salt Lake in central Anatolia.

The launch “will be followed by (another satellite,) the 5B,” the minister said. “We will have surprises (in store) at that time. We will be making a statement.”

The competition is aimed at garnering interest in aerospace for Turkey’s youth, Karaismailoğlu said. “This is a competition where students can experience all phases for satellites, from the design of a space system to its implementation,” he added.

One of the teams from the northern Zonguldak province is also working on the launch of the actual satellite, the minister said.

The Airbus Defence and Space Co. signed the contract for Türksat 5A and 5B, Turkey’s first all-electric communications satellites, in 2017. The satellites were manufactured in Britain and France with Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) as Airbus’s local industrial partner, and will be launched by SpaceX, tech heavyweight Elon Musk’s aerospace company.

"With Turksat 5A, Turkey will have a coverage area that encompasses the Middle East, Europe, North Africa and South Africa," Presidential Digital Transformation Office Director Ali Taha Koç told Anadolu.

“With this project, Turkey will become one of 10 countries in the world that produces its own telecommunication satellites,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a speech about Türksat 6A, scheduled for 2022.

The Micro-Satellite Launching System (MSLS) that will give Turkey independent access to space will be developed by Roketsan under a contract signed between the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) and Roketsan in 2018. Once the MSLS Development Project launched under the contract has been completed, it will be possible to put satellites with a maximum weight of 100 kilograms into a low earth orbit at a minimum altitude of 400 kilometers. In addition to the development of the Micro-Satellite Launching (MSL) Vehicle, Roketsan will also build testing and production facilities as well as a launch base.

Roketsan has been continuing its efforts to develop a satellite launching system since 2007. Roketsan’s Department for the Design of Satellite Launching Systems set up in 2008 was the first department established in Turkey within a defence company charged with undertaking projects concerning satellite launching systems. The MSL Project Preliminary Conceptual Design Period (Period 1) that began in 2013 under an agreement concluded between the SSB and Roketsan related to the development of a Satellite Launching System to meet a requirement of the Air Force Command was completed in 2014. Roketsan’s activities related to space are being carried out by the Space Systems Directorate established under the Department of Advanced Technologies and Systems Group founded in 2015.

Roketsan, says that satellite launching systems are a natural outcome of the company’s growth: “Space projects represent an area in which Turkey has proven its presence, and Roketsan is the only Turkish company developing launch systems, as the most critical components of these projects. With an awareness of the responsibility related to this mission, we have been making preparations for many years. We have significant resources and the necessary know-how for the development of such systems, although we are aware that there is a lot that we need to learn and try, and this is why we continue our efforts at an increasing pace.”
