Do you have any photographs, letters, poems, diaries, or stories about ancestors relating the the Great War? The University of Oxford is seeking digital copies of such items for its Great War archive.

I found a report about this in the BBC's 'Who Do You Think You Are?' genealogy magazine, which I picked up in the airport on my way to a fortnight in the sun recently.

The University is compiling the archive, which is designed to help future generations understand what the war meant to soldiers and their families. Set for launch on 11 November this year, to mark the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day, it will be a free resource open to everyone.
They will be collecting contributions via their website and through various submission days (at libraries, museums etc) until the 30th June 2008.

The website is now up and running and is free to all. It contains photographic, audio, video and publications collections. It can be found here:

The website also has a link to the Flikr Great War Archive Group:

This was set up to provide members of the public whose material could not be included on the main website due to time limits and resource restrictions, with the opportunity to continue to share their First World War objects with the world.
