Netanyahu, in one of the height of his clashes with the European Union, went to the Visegrad countries to paralyze the EU's attempts to put pressure on Israel. In that conversation, as he alludes to in his autobiography, he apparently knew he was being recorded and did not fear (perhaps even wanted) it to be leaked to the media.
- "From our experience, secure the borders. I am in favor of an open economy, in favor of bringing products from anywhere, but not people. We blocked the border with Egypt," Netanyahu said, adding other details:
- "Regarding the question about water (...) I don't know if that's true, others, here's what we have regarding the water situation here: we have less, an industrial sector, less rainfall than we've had in seventy years. Our gross national product has doubled much, much, much more. So (laughs) (...) we have a big water problem, (but) we don't have a big water problem.
- "We solved it with the following tools: we recycle 87 percent of our used water. Secondly (...) in Spain you'll see that (water recycling rate) 17 percent (....) So secondly, what is not accessible to most of you, we desalinate. Desalination of seawater is accessible to some of you, right? (Of the four countries, only Poland has an outlet to the sea)
- We have a strange situation. Yes, I have to say it (...) Europe, the European Union is (...) the only multinational organization in the world that conditions its relations with Israel, which produces technology in every field (laughs) OK? (...) on political conditions (referring to the peace process with the Palestinians)"
- "Modi came to Israel, and spent a few days here. He said: 'I want more water, clean water. Where will I get it, from Ramallah? (Laughs). No. I want more milk.' (Turning to the consultant who activated the presentation accompanying Netanyahu's remarks): Can you show them the milk. Which cow produces more milk? Who gives the most milk from one cow? That's an Israeli cow. Look at the European average, it's half of that."
I've written about this a lot here, but Netanyahu, over the years, saw that Europe was simply not on the right track and was mainly busy with appeasement and anti-Israeli policies whose sole purpose was to try to find levers of pressure on Israel, so Netanyahu simply worked on how to circumvent this or alternatively create alliances with European countries that care less about the Palestinians, which in effect paralyzes pressure on the Union:
- African countries come and go. The only ones who set conditions, who condition the agreements with Israel (...) What is it called (turning to one of the consultants) (...) The European Union Association Agreement with Israel, it is absolutely (...) I think it is crazy. I think it is actually crazy. And I am not talking about my interest, about the Israeli interest. I am talking about the interest of Europe.
- "The whole world is taking our technology, and on our side there is joy about the joint initiatives. Europe is against it. So my suggestion regarding this question (probably, the Palestinian issue): First of all, please help us and help Europe, in the association agreement or (in the agreement) 'Vision 2020'. All these things - milk, water, energy, autonomous vehicles, cyber - there is no limit to this, because you know that there are always limits regarding cyber, but we agreed to cooperate in this area as well. But in every area, health, every area (...)
- "So I think (...) if I may suggest, what comes out of this meeting is your ability to pressure your colleagues in other parts of Europe. Help Europe twice: once, do not weaken the only Western country that promotes European values and European interests, and prevent further mass migration to Europe. Then stop attacking Israel, and start supporting Israel"
- "Europe needs to decide whether it wants to live and prosper, or to disappear (...) I'm just (...) I'm not politically correct (...) I know it's a shock to say this (...) It's a joke (...) But the truth is the truth: Europe's security, Europe's economic future - these two concerns should lead to a change in policy towards Israel (...) Look at the Middle East, Europe ends in Israel, that's it. Europe ends in eastern Israel."
In fact, part of the French attempt now to pressure Israel does not come from morality but from an attempt by France and Europe to regain the leverage over Israel, by harming Israeli defense industries. This is precisely because Israel has accelerated its own production, broken sales records, and Israeli weapons are resounding throughout the world after the actions in Lebanon and Tehran, while European weapons were humiliated in India-Pakistan, The same is true when
Morocco decided to buy Israeli weapons instead of French ones.
The Israeli arms show in Tehran not only humiliates European attempts to limit Israel, but should also encourage Israel to accelerate the bypassing-Europe ties it has already developed with Azerbaijan, India, and other countries - or alternatively, to condition any arms deal with Europe (which needs effective weapons against Russia after years of neglecting the defense industries) on a permanent cessation of pressure and attempts to dictate policy.
