According to this morning’s papers none of the Army’s 14 Generals or Lieutenant Generals took their Annual Fitness Tests between April 2013 and March this year.
That includes Gen Sir Nick Houghton (CDS) – Ex Green Howards aged 59 or Gen Sir Peter Wall (CGS) – Ex RE aged 59 and only six out of the 40 Major Generals managed to attend for their tests.
The requirement to attend and pass two fitness tests per year was signed by the Adjutant General. Currently Lt Gen Gerald Berragan (Ex RA and a mere 56 years of age) and was also the Director of Military Training (2007 – 2011.)
In my days (retired 1981) failure to attend or failure to pass your Annual Fitness Assessments carried just some of the following repercussions. Lose promotion opportunities, be subject to Remedial Fitness Training, be denied trade or promotion courses, lose leave or get extra duties, etc. Not forgetting that failure to attend a test could mean being subject to disciplinary action.
