Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1968-06. Sergeant Peter Haylock of Bowral, NSW, a cook at the Task Force headquarters, found a novel way to occupy his off-duty hours at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Base, and has created great interest in the art of number painting. Sergeant Haylock, with paint brush in hand stands beside his painting on an easel.

Pilot Officer (PO) Mike O'Neill, of Narrogin, WA, the Air Tasking Officer at the Army Task Force Headquarters at Nui Dat. PO O'Neill works in the forward operations centre and as aircraft are required he signals back to the airfields with information on the mission to be flown and intelligence reports on the area that they will fly over.

Radio Operator 18715 Corporal (Cpl) Clemence Joseph (Clem) Pratt, of Bundaberg, Qld, is a member of the RAAF working with the Australian Army at Task Force Headquarters at Nui Dat. Cpl Pratt is seen here in the operations tent used by the RAAF, checking through the belts of ammunition for weapons carried by the men for their own protection.

New Zealand (NZ) gunners supporting the Australian Task Force, staged a spectacular and traditional Maori Haka welcome for the South Vietnamese Premier, Air Vice Marshall (AVM) Nguyen Cao Ky, when he visited their battery, whilst on his ‘getting to know you tour’ of the Australian Task Force at Nui Dat. Here NZ Bombardier N Hotere, of Auckland, NZ, leads the Haka.

Padres in the field in Vietnam relish the rare opportunities to meet their counterparts in other units. Recently the RAAF padre, O8930 Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) Norman Henry (Norm) Lawless, of Darwin, NT, (right) visited the New Zealand (NZ) artillery regiment at Nui Dat. He is seen here with NZ Anglican Padre, Major Dereck Cameron, sitting in a sand bagged bunker.

Binh Gia, South Vietnam. 1969-12. Members of B Squadron, 1st Armoured Regiment, based at Nui Dat, challenged the 655th Vietnamese Regional Force troops based at Binh Gia, to a volleyball match. The Vietnamese soldiers won the match despite the determined efforts of the Australians. An enthusiastic crowd of Vietnamese villagers gathered to watch.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1969-12. Singer Jill Lindfield on stage entertaining troops of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) during a Christmas/New Year concert party at Luscombe Bowl. The show, sponsored by the Army and the Australian Forces Overseas Fund, drew a capacity crowd of nearly 2000 soldiers who sat for hours in the tropical heat. Backing the entertainers was the Sydney ABC Dance Band.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1970-01. Soldiers watch as entertainer Julie Lewis sings on stage at Luscombe Bowl at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF). Julie was one of two female entertainers in the Army and the Australian Forces Overseas Fund sponsored concert party which visited the war zone over Christmas and New Year. Backed by the Sydney ABC Dance Band the show played to capacity audiences.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1969-12. Baron and Bijou, on stage, perform for troops with a balancing act at Luscombe Bowl. One of the best Christmas presents the soldiers of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) received was this Christmas concert party. The show, sponsored by the Army and the Australian Forces Overseas Fund, also included two female entertainers and a comedian who were backed by the Sydney ABC Dance Band.

Captain Douglas Formby of Albany, WA, the second in command of B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, examines some of the tinned goods in a box sent by viewers of Channel 7, Perth, WA. The Christmas parcel was sent by the Australian Forces Overseas Fund to the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF).

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1970-01. Captain Bryan Franklin of St John's Wood, Qld, playing a game of badminton at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Base. Capt Franklin, a member of the 1st Australian Civil Affairs Unit, is the Phuoc Tuy Province youth and sports adviser for 26,000 young people.

Le Thi Hoa (?Tran Thi Sinh) rallied to the South Vietnamese Government under the Chieu Hoi or Open Arms programme after five years as a cook with the Viet Cong (VC) in the Long Hai hills. Private Dave Everitt of Adelaide, SA, Sergeant Russell Tetlow of Sydney, NSW, and a Vietnamese sergeant drove her back to the hamlet of An Thanh, to see her home and family for the first time since her abduction by the VC in 1965.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. August 1970. Commander of the Australian Force in Vietnam (COMAFV), Major General C. A. E. Fraser, talks to 8 Platoon, 8th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR). Maj Gen Fraser flew from Saigon specially to speak to the platoon after it ambushed a re-supply party of fifty Viet Cong (VC), killing seventeen.
