some info about why the war happened , Vietnam and china have a long history ( of Vietnam 2000+ year old history , 1000 year Vietnam was under china rule ) and countless of war ( pretty much after we gain independence for them for good in 900s ) every Chinese dynasty have invade and wage war vs Vietnam ( there also cooperate time , when both have common enemy , aka mongol made song ( tong in Vietnamese ) dynasty and Vietnam relation was extremely good , America/French made Vietnam and china relation good until 1973 ) all start because of Khmer rouge and it pro maoist leader popot who hate vietnam to gut which manage to hijack Khmer rouge by killing off it origin leader ( many are ex Cambodian Vietminh , just like pathet lao leader are ex lao Vietminh ) and moderate faction start to attack Vietnam southern border since 1975 to 1978 and commit countless of crime in they raid into our territory and island that they capture from us ( ba chuc village , tho chu island , ... ) Vietnam feel threat being attack from 2 front ( Cambodia in the south , china in the north ) with crazy speech and action of Khmer rouge ( to invade the south vietnam wipe out it population and annex it ) ( and china become more aggressive along northern border , raising border issue which didn't exist in1949-75 ) made our leader decide to sign a alliance treaty with the soviet ( which made the Chinese extremely mad ) and decide to remove Khmer rouge and polpot , which lead the Chinese to invade Vietnam to save they allied which fail and lead to the sino-vietnam border war that last 10 year and the most stupid war ever beside the American war ( or Vietnam war in America view )

Vietnam recon team was drop via mi4 not sure which year

sorry ben busy this few day have to go to vinh long for few day ( I bet you know where is vinh long ya RL64L ) about the question : both side didn't used it airforce at all , for china it will get huge lost of plane / pilot if it used in the war for sure vs one of the best airdefense system at that time that have most combat experience in airdefense ,Chinese mig17/19/21 and H6 + il28 bomber wont stand a chance vs a integrated airdefense system , Vietnam didn't used it airforce cause most of the plane up north are mig21/19/17 have limit ground attack the pilot of those plane are not train for CAS anyway , but we did intend to used our airforce for the massive offensive that never happened cause Chinese withdrew few day befor the offensive and like usual with our ancestor diplomat never humiliated the Chinese too much or els they will keep coming to save face so the offensive was call off ( same reason le loi emperor after defeat the Ming return they POW offer food / ship , also send tribute to the Ming dynasty and ask for peace , same thing happened with other war vs the Chinese , the stategy are know hard and soft , hard when Chinese invade , soft when they withdrew or defeat cause after all we have to live with them like it or not they aint gona move and china have 10x the population of us ) uh1 helicopter was send to Ha noi , same for a37 and f5 + the recon cesna (u17 ? ) that fire smoke rocket to pint point target for a37/f5.
but the war did claim 2 shot down plane on both side during entire war , 1 was a Vietnamese mig21 recon version flying near the border hit by a Hong ky 1 or 2 ( red flag 1/2 or hq1 or 2 a Chinese copy of sam 2 )some time around the 1980s , while Chinese side lost a mig 19 that try to defect to Vietnam but the guy didn't radio and was shot down by the airdefense , the Chinese also badly damage another mig21 recon with a Hong ky missile but it manage to land at it base but the plane was written off , not sure if Chinese side have damage plane or not , there also a report on Vietnam commando doing a raid on a Chinese airfield 40km from the border

Very interesting, Nobitadaidamvn -- thank you for the reply!! I concur that China must have had a great deal of respect for Vietnam's air defense capabilities, and probably did not give much consideration to offensive air operations. I'm curious how China and Vietnam might have evolved their Air Force's since then, especially regarding CAS. I'll have to take some time to look that up on the days ahead. Cheers! RL

china airforce now day only behind America , they tech also only behind you guy , they have long been surpass the Russian in many field . about Vietnam airforce modern CAS we have guide bomb and ground attack missile and anti radar missile ( beside the tradition dumb bomb and rocket ) so equal to most asean country , behind the Singaporean only ( the rich boy in the asean )

found this interest group who doing a 100 year of Vietnam army uniform and also dress up in other country uniform , a lot of they member are in the army or ex vet

Vietnam soldier after 1980 ( pretty much after 1979 Vietnam and china start to dig in in to mountain/hill top and start a bloody arty shelling trench war , so pretty much both side troop all get steel helmet , didn't help the mountain along Vietnam-china border are rock mountain with very thin layer of soil on top

how Vietnamese troop ( on the left side ) and Chinese on ( the right side) , most easy way to tell them apart from historic photo ( both alive and dead troop are the leg , Chinese used leg bonding to protect they leg from insect and bush cut , while Vietnam don't ) color of the uniform is another way to tell apart beside the helmet / soft hat/ collar ) ( the female photo is the work of the Vietnamese group and a Taiwanese group ( who also do 100 year uniform of china ( both PRC and ROC )( the girl on the right are Taiwanese ))

Are girls footwear jungle boots type (canvas and rubber)? How long do they last? Those we used didn't last more then two months on hard terrain.

it a canvas and rubber boot , it do last long enough and it dang dirt cheap ( you can get one now day from military surplus for around 120k dong or around 5 -6 dolar ( while the new military boots model that current being used cost a lot way more around 700-800k nearly 30-35 dolar per pair ) the down size is it such in long march the pad aint that good and comfort btw it used by both male and female and by both side ( china and Vietnam )
