DETERMINED SUICIDE
.

A tragic occurrence took place yesterday morning, when Sergeant Richard Stubbs, belonging to No. 24 Co. Royal Engineers, occupying quarters in Vilhena Apartments, No. 49Fr Strada Maggazini, Floriana, committed suicide, by cutting his throat with a razor.
It appears that the unfortunate man had been suffering of late from the effects of a cold which had occasioned him some anxiety.
A married Sergeant of the Royal Marines, living in the adjoining quarters, who had kindly volunteered to accommodate his wife and child in order to attend upon him during the night, was asleep in an adjoining room up to about 4.30 a.m., when he was awakened by the movements of his companion who was discovered to be lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He quickly summoned the police, without disturbing the women and children, and almost immediately, Dr. Cammilleri, District Medical Officer, was in attendance, but to no avail as the wound inflicted was of such a desperate nature that life was despaired of, and resulted in death which followed within half an hour after the occurrence. The body was subsequently conveyed to the mortuary of the Military Hospital Valletta for the usual post mortem examination.
The deceased, who was 30 years of age, was a most intelligent N.C. officer and highly respected by all who knew him, for his quiet and amiable disposition. The deepest sympathy is shared with his wife and child in their heartrending bereavement.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4.30 o'clock, when the remains of the deceased will be interred with the usual military honours in the Pieta Cemetery where the service will be read by the Rev. Peverley Dodd, A.C. (Wesleyan) to the Forces.
