Most likely the helmets were purchased from Nazi Germany during the 1930's, but I don't know any details about that. Anyone with more info is welcome to share it.

In short, you are correct, even the WWI vintage and Austro-Hungarian versions. Served well into the 1980. The steel shells were "unkillable", liners and straps were, of course replaced sometimes in very primitive fashion. Some helmets had 5-6 coats of paint applied over the decades of service on them according to the Soviet sources.

Absolutely. As you can imagine all kinds of contraband was being shipped into the USSR during the Afghan War, but not these helmets. Although, I have heard that due to rough usage and "upgrades" they were no longer valuable.
 
Actually, some people are willing to pay good money for a helmet like these:

The Afghan triple triangle is missing, no strap as well, and yet it coast 104$.
