In Afghanistan the basic 5-mile-range Stinger missile downed over 270 Soviet aircraft (a 79% combat success rate), and helped to stop air assault operations and force Soviet withdrawal.
I read a few papers about the thema and the conclusion was that in the early beging they were a massive thread but then all soviet planes including rotatory wing started to include flares and chaff dispensers. As the training was very poor in most cases they didn´t get very high rates. Also because they use a mixture of stingers, Redeye and SA-7 grail missiles. The last two were not vey accurate compared with the Stingers. And also soviets knew how to avoid it.
Yes they were not my comments as such, that was the description given with the image.
I agree that with the use of countermeasures the risk from AA missiles would have reduced but perhaps still a significant threat.
perhaps somebody with more knowledge than me could give us an insight into the threat and its result on Soviet operations
