The U.S. Naval Degaussing Station, Lamberts Point in the middle of the Elizabeth River, Norfolk, Virginia. There since the end of World War II. I was stationed here in 1967 as one of two cooks on the station. We used a liberty launch to go to the shore landing and back to the station. We had our cars parked at the landing. The station demagnetized mostly submarines but some larger ships also. The magnetic force of the poles would mess up the ship’s instruments as well as making the hulls susceptible to mines. Seaman wrapped the cables around the ships and civilian engineers performed the degaussing process from inside the controls building. The station is basically a set of piers with slips to accommodate the ships/boats.
