The SS United States had a Conservancy which was trying to save the ship. It's been tied to the pier for 30 years until the pier owner raised the rent beyond what was affordable. There were plans to restore her as a cruise ship, restore her as a hotel, etc. All fell through. Now on her final voyage to be sunk as an artificial reef.

Restoring her would have been nice.

A very costly and long enterprise, but maybe a worthy one.

However if that had happened it would have been much better to have her keep her original vintage look, and not go for a modern relooking.

I agree.

The cost would have been prohibitive, especially since the interior was gutted before the Conservancy acquired her. Restoring her to an operational ship would certainly have cost hundreds of millions or more.

SS Rotterdam. Only cost the tax payer €300m to restore her ... to a stationary hotel ... 😣

Look at those oversized stacks. No wonder she was the fastest Ocean Liner ever built. Built with the help of the US Government, on condition it would be used in wartime to transport 15,000 troops at a time, to Europe in 3 days.

To think the money that has been stolen by the Dems is enough to pay for her to be Rebuilt ....

Shame that no Goverment gave a damn about her

I wouldn't be surprised if restoration would have cost $1 billion. The interior was gutted in Turkey when the ship was to be scrapped and has been sitting at the pier for 30 years with no maintenance .
