The SS United States had a Conservancy which was trying to save the ship. It's been tied to the pier for 30 years until the pier owner raised the rent beyond what was affordable. There were plans to restore her as a cruise ship, restore her as a hotel, etc. All fell through. Now on her final voyage to be sunk as an artificial reef.
The cost would have been prohibitive, especially since the interior was gutted before the Conservancy acquired her. Restoring her to an operational ship would certainly have cost hundreds of millions or more.
That would have been fitting for the United States. When you see the TRILLIONS wasted through fraud being found by DOGE, it just sick that this historic ship couldn't be saved.
Look at those oversized stacks. No wonder she was the fastest Ocean Liner ever built. Built with the help of the US Government, on condition it would be used in wartime to transport 15,000 troops at a time, to Europe in 3 days.
I wouldn't be surprised if restoration would have cost $1 billion. The interior was gutted in Turkey when the ship was to be scrapped and has been sitting at the pier for 30 years with no maintenance .
