Minuteman III launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base

An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile was successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base early Wednesday morning.

According to Vandenberg Air Force Base, the unarmed rocket took off at 2:42 a.m. as part of an operational test. Col. Kris Barcomb, 30th Operations Group commander, was the launch decision authority.

“The partnership between the 30th Space Wing and our Air Force Global Strike Command mission partners has culminated in another safe Minuteman III operational test launch," said Col. Barcomb. "The tireless effort put forth by the 90th Missile Wing, 576th Flight Test Squadron and 30th Space Wing is simply remarkable. Their teamwork and combined efforts over the past few months showcase their immense dedication to the mission and why they are some of the best operators in the Air Force."

I attended this event at a local airport as I wanted to get shots of the WW2 warplanes.

I'd never seen the bombers up-close, and guests were allowed to climb through them. Must confess, I damn near had a claustrophobic attack inside the B17 - much closer quarters than I'd imagined. For those with cash to spare, the planes took 30 minute flights with paying guests. The P40 - $2200, the P51 - $2400; bomber rides started at $400. As I'm currently a Gentleman of Leisure (unemployed), even the $400 flight was off the table!

Both the TP40 and P51 were in dual-seat configurations.

Nice pics!

Thanks, @Chazman looks like your profile pic is the tail gunner for the B17. Sight lines aiming points and angles all painted on the aft Perspex - the gunner making his shots with a very primitive HUD!

Regarding my profile pic, it's cool but chosen at random. While on the TAARB board, a mod mentioned that I needed a profile pic, since I hadn't bother to add one. So I just grabbed it from that days pictures and presto... the rest is history! LOL!
