Photos Aussies and Kiwi's in Vietnam

Vung Tau, Vietnam. 1966-08-26. Private Barry (Custard) Mellor, 11 Platoon, survivor of the Battle of Long Tan, lying in a hospital bed with a bullet wound to his cheek and leg, smoking a cigarette. Mellor was found leaning against a rubber tree, by Delta Company, the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), on its return twelve hours later.

Vung Tau, Vietnam. 1966-08-26. Army bandsman-cum-stretcher bearer Private Graeme Davis of Lismore, NSW, describes his arm wound to Australian Red Cross worker Miss Hilda Zinner as relaxes in Vung Tau Military Hospital. Davis who was shot in the arm, was one of the twenty four Australians of the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), wounded in the battle of Long Tan.

Private Jimmy Richmond, 11 Platoon, the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), wounded in the chest, spent the night at his section post after the Battle of Long Tan. Responding well after his ordeal he receives treatment in hospital from US Army Nurse Moore.

Vung Tau, Vietnam. 1966-08-26. Sergeant Jim (Paddy) Todd of the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), in a military hospital bed reading a letter from family at home in Brisbane, Qld. Todd was shot in both feet and crawled more than 300 yards to safety during the battle of Long Tan.

Informal outdoor portrait of 6776 Major (Maj) (later Lieutenant Colonel) Harry Smith, 6 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR). He is wearing a Tokarev pistol in a holster. He recovered the pistol from the body of a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) soldier the day after the battle of Long Tan. It is now held in the Memorial's collection as REL27493. Maj Smith was commander of D Company, 6RAR, during the battle on the afternoon of 18 August 1966. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for his actions during the battle. In 2008, following a review of gallantry awards relating to the battle of Long Tan, he was also awarded the Star of Gallantry (SG), equivalent to the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for which he had been recommended after the battle.

Forward Observer 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery. Capt Stanley was attached to Delta Company 6RAR during the Battle of Long Tan and along with Bdr Willy Walker and LBdr Murray Broomhall controlled the Australian, New Zealand and American artillery throughout the battle and under fire.

Bdr Walker was attached to Delta Company 6RAR during the Battle of Long Tan and along with Capt Morrie Stanley and LBdr Murray Broomhall controlled the Australian, New Zealand and American artillery throughout the battle and under fire.

Sergeant (Sgt) John Carter of Benalla, Vic, an M113 armoured personnel carrier (APC) crew commander with B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC), supporting the 9th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (9RAR), in Exercise Riflebird at Shoalwater Bay. Sgt Carter was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for the role he played in bringing relief to the famous Delta Company of 6RAR at the battle of Long Tan in Vietnam in 1966.

Flt Lt Riley was commander of the helicopter detachment which participated in the ammunition drop to the beleaguered D Company, 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) when they were running short of rounds of ammunition, during the Battle of Long Tan. On 18 August 1966, D Company, 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) fought a battle against more than 2 000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan. After fighting in torrential rain for four hours, and almost being overrun, they were supported by accurate artillery fire from the nearby Australian task force base, an ammunition resupply by two Iroquois helicopters from 9 Squadron, RAAF, and the arrival of infantry reinforcements carried by Armoured Personnel Carriers. Eighteen Australians were killed and twenty-four wounded as a result of this engagement, which became known as the Battle of Long Tan.

He served a later tour with B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment from December 1969 - June 1970.

A long refreshing drink from a water bottle as Private (Pte) Paul Large, 12 Platoon, D Company, 6 RAR, of Coolah, NSW, pauses during digging in on Operation Enoggera, the first mission by the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), against the Viet Cong. Pte Large was killed in action on 18 August 1966 at Long Tan.
