Jim Berry and Terry O'Farrell about to go out on patrol with 2 Squadron Australian SAS. The Australian SAS were amongst the most successful groups participating in Long range patrols behind enemy lines.

The picture is from O'Farrell's excellent book "Behind enemy lines" highly recommended.

I've also read every book by Gary Linderer, can anyone recommend other good books on LRRP, LRP etc. patrols?

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. September 1971. Corporal Jeff Estreich of Mullimbimby, NSW, signals the directions to be followed as he leads his infantry section out through the barbed wire perimeter of the 1st Australian Task Force Base (1ATF) at Nui Dat. Still negotiating the defensive obstacle were Private (Pte) Wayne Warren of Natone, Tas, the section's machine gunner; Pte Graham Miller of North Cottesloe, WA (partly obscured); Lance Corporal Bob Nugent of Cairns, Qld, the sections second-in-command; and 3799722 Pte Cees Mostaard of Northcote, Vic. The men were commencing a patrol with the 1st Australian Reinforcement Unit just a few days before leaving the unit and transferring to the battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR).

Vietnam. 1966-08-19. Private Brian Wood of Toowoomba, Qld, carrying an M60 machine gun, was among soldiers of the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), who decimated and pursued the Viet Cong after a bitter battle at Long Tan, in Phuoc Tuy Province, part of Operation Smithfield. In follow-up sweeps the Diggers discovered graves and signs of a hasty retreat by the large Viet Cong force.

2786038 Private Ian James Thomson, and 5715180 Lance Corporal Paul Richard Peter Van Risjewijk. Both men were killed in action whilst serving with 3RAR in South Vietnam on the 19th of October 1968.
Ian was a national serviceman and was drafted into the army on the 13th of November 1967. He was initially posted to 7RAR then HQ 1st ATF before being posted to 3RAR on the 3rd of September 1968. Paul was also a national serviceman originally from Surrey, England, who was enlisted into the Australian Army on the 28th of December 1967 and posted to 3RAR.
Both men were killed in action on the 19th of October 1968 after being fatally wounded by RPG fire during an engagement as part of Operation CAPITAL. Operation CAPITAL was a nine day operation that took place in Phuoc Tuy Province.
The two men were manning their machinegun during the engagement, and remained at their position until air support arrived to relieve the situation. Their bravery and self-sacrifice saved countless other Australians.
Paul was 21 and Ian was 22 at the time of their deaths – both men were just 12 days away from returning home on the day they died.
Lest we forget.

A friend of the family was in 85 Transport and in Viet Nam when this pic was taken. I've shown that pic to his kids.

I served with TOF after he finished up as RSM of SASR and commissioned as an Officer. We had him in 8/9 for a posting as a major.

The ultimate SASR book is Phantoms of the Jungle by David Horner. They did an update about 15 years ago, renamed it Phantoms of War and added on a bit about Somalia, Rwanda, Timor, and early days of Iraq and Afghanistan. It's by David Horner.

Another good one is Sleeping with your ears open by Garry McKay, again it was reprinted and renamed, ON PATROL WITH THE SAS: Sleeping with your ears open. Pretty sure there was no additions to the second printing, just the cover and title change. I reckon it details the training in PNG, and operational work in Borneo and South Viet Nam.

And a last good one, albeit fiction is, Uncertain Fate, an Australian SAS patrol in Vietnam by Graham Brammer. Graham had been a patrol commander in Vietnam.

Phuoc Tuy Province. Informal portraits of Sergeant Mike Coleridge, an Australian Army Public Relations photographer who served in South Vietnam between November 1966 - November 1967. His most famous picture was taken on 26 August 1967 and shows soldiers of 7th Battalion being uplifted by US Army Iroquois helicopters back to Nui Dat after completing Operation Ulmarra. It is etched on the Vietnam Memorial on Anzac Parade, Canberra.

Australian members of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) with US Special Forces in the command bunker at the old French fort at Ngok Tavak. Identified, left to right: Sergeant First Class (SFC) Harold H. Swicegood; 17093 Captain (Capt) John Ernest D White AATTV; Sergeant (Sgt E-5) Kenneth J Benway, medic, 11th Company Da Nang Mike Force; Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Frank Lucas; Sgt David A. Blomgren; ?Sgt Miller and WO2 Donald George (Don) Cameron. Capt White joined the AATTV in February 1968. He was soon commanding a 120-strong company of Americans, Chinese mercenaries, and Montagnards near the Laotian border. On 10 May White's company was attacked by a large North Vietnamese force at Ngok Tavak. Hand-to-hand combat took place, but two Australian warrant officers, Don Cameron and Frank Lucas, bravely led a counter-attack that prevented the fort from being overrun. WO2 Cameron was commander of one of three platoons which platoon came under heavy ambush between 8 to 10 May 1968 from Viet Cong (VC) near Ngok Tavak. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) on 1 January 1970 for his actions in Vietnam whilst serving as a WO Class 1 with the AATTV. WO2 Cameron served in Vietnam from 20 October 1965 to 19 October 1966 and also completed a second tour from 18 February 1968 to 20 November 1968. Cameron originally enlisted in Second World War as a private on 19 December 1944 and was discharged in 1947. He next served as a Lance Corporal with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) in Korea where he was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 1 January 1952. He was awarded a second MM on 6 March 1969 in Vietnam with AATTV.

Early 1968, Bien Hoa Province - Private Gus Warneke of Jervois, SA (right), and three other soldiers, prepare to move out on a dawn patrol during Operation Coburg. Operation Coburg (24 January − 1 March 1968) was an Australian and New Zealand military action during the Vietnam War. The operation saw heavy fighting between the 1st Australian Task Force (1 ATF) and North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong during the wider fighting around Long Binh and Bien Hoa. American and South Vietnamese intelligence reports had indicated that an imminent communist offensive during the Tet New Year festival was likely, and in response the Australians and New Zealanders were deployed away from their base in Phuoc Tuy Province to bolster American and South Vietnamese forces defending the Long Binh–Bien Hoa complex north-east of Saigon.

Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam. 1969-12. A view of an enemy weapon from the other end during Operation Marsden. Private (Pte) Dennis Power of Lalbert, Vic (left), and Pte Graham Baird of Bayswater, WA, are both members of Support Company, 6RAR /NZ (ANZAC) (The ANZAC Battalion comprising 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment and a component from the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment), which was combing the rugged May Tao mountains in search of the Viet Cong. The weapon, a 75mm recoilless rifle, was found by D Company, 6RAR, in a cave along with about three tons of mines, grenades, ammunition and arms, in what is the biggest explosives and arms cache uncovered in the Province to date.
