Ronald Clarence MAY. Son of Sergeant George May, 1st Suffolk Regiment and Harriet Anne Elizabeth nee Sherburn. Died 22nd November 1910 aged 11 months. Native of Isle of Wight.

He joined the at Bury St Edmunds Suffolk on the 13 August 1894 aged 18 and 7 months, occupation labourer and posted to the 1st Suffolk Regiment as private 3909. He was born in 1876 at Outwell Cambridgeshire and was the son of John and Catherine nee Green of (1891) Main Road. Outwell In 1911 his mother was now a widow and she used the name of Francis Catherine May. Overseas postings.
India 21 October 1896 to 17 January 1905. Furlough to UK returned to India 9 September 1905 to 27 December 1907 then to UK. Malta 7 September 1910 to 24 January 1911, Egypt 25 November 1911 to 30 December 1911 then UK. The great war had started while he was in England and on the 13 August 1914 he embarked for the British Expeditionary Force in France.
On the 28th August 1914 while on active service he received a gunshot wound to a hip at Rouen France. Treated at No 2 Base Hospital on the 2 September 1914, invalided to England and admitted into Brighton General Hospital. On the 30 September 1914 he was at Felixstowe with the 3rd Suffolks. He embarked for France on the 3 August 1915 and joined the 2nd Suffolks from Infantry Base Depot. On the 31 August 1916 he was back at the Infantry Base Depot from the front, then to 15 Infantry Base Depot Etaples on the 1 September 1916, to await transfer to England which was on the 5 September 1916. The following day he was at the regimental Depot on the 18 September posted to the 3rd Suffolk Regiment. He was granted furlough (leave) from the 5 October 1917 to 4 November 1917 from Felixstowe. He was discharged on the 5 February 1919 as C.S.M. 513724 with 199 Coy Labour Corps. No record remains to show this transfer from the Suffolk Regt to the Labour Corps. His Medal Card does show his two army numbers. Promotions and service extensions.
Lance Corporal 15 September 1897 Corporal 14 February 1902 Sergeant 31 March 1903. Re-engaged at Karachi on the 21 December 1904 for the Suffolk Regiment for such a period to complete 21 years service. Company Sergeant Major 16 February 1917 with the 3rd Battalion. Colour Sergeant 4 June 1914 with the 2nd Battalion.
While in India he married Harriet Ann Elizabeth Sherburn (British subject) on the 24 October 1906 at St Mary's Church at Fort St George Madras India. They had the following children. Edna Evelyn born at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on the 25 November 1908, baptised on the 20 December 1908 at St Mary Church Bury St Edmunds. Ronald Clarence born at Parkhurst , Isle of Wight on the 21 December 1909 baptised at Parkhurst 9 January 1911 and died on enteritis in Malta on the 22 November 1910. Frederick George on the 7 November 1917 at Wisbech Cambridgeshire. His mother was living at Tydd near Wisbech
