Some notes from what remains of William Carter's M.C. army records.
He joined up aged 18 and 2 months on the 30th October 1891 and posted as private 3549 to the depot of the Northamptonshire Regiment .
At the time of enlistment into the Northamptonshire Regiment he was serving with the 4th East Surrey Regiment
He was living with his parents John and Elizabeth in the parish of St Marys, London, occupation Labourer. On the 3rd March 1901 he was posted to South Africa to the 26th May 1904. He was married on the 6th October 1901 at St Sepulchre church Northampton to Miss Nellie (birth name Ellen) Dales. (daughter of John Thomas and Mary Ann nee Hanger) Her sister Alice Selina Dales was one the witnesses. After the marriage his wife went to live at 46 Adelaide Street, Northampton. After he left South Africa he was posted back to England. On the 18th January 1911 he was posted to Malta and left on the 17th January 1914. From Malta to Alexandria with his family on the 18th January 1914 to the 26th October 1914, posted back to England. While in Malta he was given permission on the 3rd January 1912 to continue serving the colours beyond 21 years service. He was posted to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 1st September 1915 and returned to Warley, Essex England on the 4th June 1917. On this dated he was granted a temporary commission as Honorary Lieutenant Quarter Master from the rank of Sergeant Major and posted from the 2nd battalion to the 6th Northamptonshire Regiment.
Awards.
Silver Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct on the 18th April 1910 and the Military Cross 27th July 1916.
London Gazette dated 25th August 1916 Military Cross.
Awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the field. He organised parties for the evacuation of wounded and working parties at time under heavy fire.
He was discharged from the army after completing 25 years and 219 days.
Throughout his army career he suffered from inflamation of the bladder which started in 1907.
His parents were called John and Elizabeth and they lived at 7 Pleasant Place, St James End, Northampton at the time he enlisted.
The children of the family were the following. William Thomas born 8th July 1902 at Northampton. Nellie born on the 4th March 1906 at Bordon, Hampshire. Donald Roy born on the 25th October 1913 in Malta and died in Valletta Malta on the 26th October 1913 (as recorded in the records) and Leslie born on the 30th September 1914 at Alexandria, Egypt.
