PALMER Arthur Frederick. Sergeant, T2/14153, 475th Horse Transport Coy., 10th Div. Train, Royal Army Service Corps. Died 8th September 1916, aged 35 years at Military Hospital, Tigne, Malta. Born on the 9th December 1879 at Loughborough, Leicestershire lived at Belvedere, Kent son of the late Dr William Grimes Palmer and Eliza. In 1911 he was living with his widowed mother at Thorpe Cottage, Loughborough, Leicestershire. Be faithful unto death and I will give the a crown of life.

HORSFIELD Frederick Henry. Rifleman, 8051, 3rd King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Died of malaria and dusentry on the 20th September 1916, aged 30 years at Military Hospital, Imtarfa, Malta. Son of Frederick and Alice, nee Swain of 1 Esher Street, Westminster, London, previously 16 Amvell Street, Middleton Square, Islington, London.
Some notes from what remains of his army records -
He joined up as a Boy Soldier aged 14 years and 8 months on the 16th April 1907 at Aldershot for 12 years. He was a musician and lived with his parents, Frederick and Alice (nee Swain). He was born on the 14th August 1892 at 1 Povey Court, Frederick Street, Regency Square, Westminster. London. He was posted as Boy 8051 into the 3rd Kings Royal Rifle Corps. On the 16th August 1910 he was Rifleman 8051 having attained the age of 18 years. He was posted to the 1st Battalion on the 3rd October 1910. In 1911 he was stationed at New Barracks, Gosport aged 18 serving with the 1st Kings Royal Rifles. On the 9th October 1913 he was posted to the 3rd Battalion. He served in Malta from the 19th November 1909 to 3rd October 1910, back to England. Left England for India on the 9th October 1913 to the 18th November 1914. Back to England 19th November 1914 to 19th December 1914, Posted to France to join his regiment, returned to England on the 5th February 1915 he was posted to the depot, then to the 6th Battalion on the 28th December 1915. He was Lance Corporal on the 10th January 1916 still with the 6th Battalion. On the 25th June 1916 he was in detention in the Guard Room awaiting his Regimental Court Martial the following day. His offence, when on active service conduct to the prejudice etc (Actual offence was not stated) He was sentenced to 28 days detention confirmed by Officer Commanding the Battalion who remited 20 days off the detention awarded to guard room detention. He was returned to duty on the 5th July 1916, reduced to rank of rifleman and posted to the 3rd Battalion. He embarked from Devonport on the 10th August 1916 and disembarked at Salonika on the 23rd August 1916 and joined the 3rd Battalion the next day in the field. While in Salonika he fell ill with Malaria and dysentery (date not recorded) and at some stage he was invalided to Malta where his died in Military Hospital, Tigne.


SPROUL William. Private, 4/9603, 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, died 21st September 1916. Brother of David who was granted a war gratuity on the 12th January 1917, revised on the 12th September 1919. Born at Paisley, Renfrewshire
