WHITEHORNE Alfred Charles. Able Seaman J24178. Royal Navy of HMS Adamant (attached to Submarine E25) Accidentally drowned at Pyrgos, Aegean island of Santorini, Greece 14 September 1918 aged 20 years with Engine Room Artificer Lennon. Born 29 September 1897 at Wallingford Berkshire to George and Eliza Harriett Whitehorne of 17 St John's Road Wallingford Berkshire. His mother was informed of his death. Enlisted 17 April 1913 on HMS Ganges occupation prior to enlistment carriers boy. The report into the drowning stated, missing believed drowned. No further trace of of men or boat accidentally entering (? sea) the result of a sudden gale without warning just before dark. No Court of Inquiry to be held as no further evidence could be obtained, no blame attributable to anyone. Dated 29 September 1918.
Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
