It´s BIG, I mean really big even by today´s standards... Well, Kalinin´s views on society weren´t politically correct. Maybe his project was sabotaged, maybe not but Tupolev was more likable by the party so he got to be the rags-to-riches hero here instead. On the other hand, the plane had some troubles even on its maiden flight, the airframe construction was resonating with the frequency of the engine. Maybe if they took out all the bugs and were bigger comrades with the regime, then yes, the plane would succeed in its mission as a bomber.
