The 174th AHC rotated a two week commitment to provide C & C (command and control) aircraft for C Company, 5th Special Forces Group in Danang. The aircraft was for the personal use of Col Schungel, CO of Company C.

Almost always it was Col Schungel and the sergeant major of C Company, SM Herman Hodge, who we nicknamed “Mr. Clean” because he bore a striking resemblance to the guy on the label with the same name, bald head and massive physical presence. His troops called him “Preacher Hodge” and he was a butt chewing machine.

On one particular mission enemy fire was taken but there was no consequential damage. Back at Danang, after the Col and the sergeant major exited the aircraft, a pool of blood was discovered on a seat and on the floor under the seat.

The sergeant major had taken a bullet in the buttocks but calmly walked over to the medic shack, had it removed, the wound sewed up and patched and was back on the next flight two hours later.
