On this day in 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna recaptured the Alamo after fighting a bloody battle that lasted 13-days. Though he had a vast army, he was held off by less than 200 men some of them being American folk heroes. They included William B. Travis, the commander, Jim Bowie a renowned knife fighter, and David Crockett, famed frontiersman and former congressman from Tennessee.
The final assault came before daybreak on the morning of March 6, 1836. The Mexican soldiers attacked in the predawn darkness but were beaten back by cannon and small arms fire from inside the Alamo. However, by sunrise the battle was over, but is still remembered the world over as a great standing for freedom against overwhelming odds.
