When I was in Cyprus in 1964, the RAF airbase in Nicosia was rented to the island for civil use. However, every night at 18.00 hours an RAF Lightning aircraft flew down the runway without landing to claim sovereignty.

At the end of the runway it would stand on its tail and do a vertical climb with about 20ft of flame coming out of its engines.

It was a spectacular sight to see.
