Original caption reads:
"Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) pilot Lieutenant C J Lavender of Enfield, stands beside his Fleet Air Arm Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter aircraft on the flight deck of the Royal Navy Illustrious-class aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable currently in action with the British Pacific Fleet off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia during World War II on 18th January 1945."

Late:
D.S.C. Lieutenant-Commander Royal Navy H.M.S. Blackcap. Edmonton, London Borough of Enfield, Greater London, England. Born 10. Nov. 1921 - KIS 10 Nov. 1955 - Sadly on his 34th Birthday.
When serving as a chief Flying Instructor he was killed in an accident in a Supermarine Attacker FB2 (WP281) while avoiding a collision with another aircraft.
As a lieutenant he was awarded the D.S.C. on 23 May 1952 "for distinguished service in operations in Korean waters."

Date: September 28, 1940. Location: Bay of Kiel, Germany. Event: Formally commissioned into the German Navy a month ago, battleship Bismarck is departing Kiel for Gotenhafen to perform 2-month long extensive trials and combat training. Original color photo.

The Third Battle of the Aisne. French infantry coming back through Passy-sur-Marne, pass a British regimental band resting by the roadside.
(NB. the date is correct, the British troops have helmets in their kit and this could be the 8th (Service) Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment.)

German pre-dreadnought battleship "Schleswig-Holstein" attacks Polish positions in Westerplatte, from the harbor of Danzig, on the early morning of September 1st, 1939.

Force-landed Spitfire Mk IX, 308 Sqn (Polish), on January 1, 1945 flown by Tadeusz Szlenkier (on left). The aircraft was slightly damaged probably by the fire of Fw Hofmann flying a Focke-Wulf 190 A-8 of 3/JG 1, and run out of fuel.
Before force-landing Szlenkier himself shot down another FW190 belonging to 8 Staffel of that unit.

In fact this picture was taken after Westerplatte surrender (most likely 8 - 11 September 1939). Schleswig-Holstein is in Westerplatte Ammunition Pool and firing at polish defenders positions in Gdynia. Note main gun elevation angle - distance to Gdynia from that point is about 10 km.
