Lieutenant Colonel in the Rifle Brigade. On retirement he joined the 2nd Derbyshire Militia, late to become the Sherwood Foresters, transferred into the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment in 1888. He was the son of William 7th Duke of Devonshire and Blanche Georgina.
