Yep, they are demobilised Alpinis working as muleteers for the US Army.
One appears to have a weapon swinging from the mule, so hardly demobilized (which infers returned to civil life) more likely part of the Italian military that went over to the Allies after the invasion of Sicily.

I was not sure if they had weapons. AFAIK both scenarios would be valid. The newly reformed Italian Army fought along the Allied Forces in Italy but they also employed Italian soldiers as work-force.
