In Vietnam, some SEALs preferred American-made Levi’s 501 and 505 denim jeans instead of standard issue dungarees. Specifically during late 1970 and early 1971, SEALs donned Levi’s jeans in combat. Denim could better withstand the rigors of the jungle climate, providing improved protection from leeches, mosquitos and other bugs, especially when combined with a layer of pantyhose underneath. Anecdotes also tell of soldiers customizing the Levi’s 5-pocket design by sewing on additional pockets made from camouflage fabric. The tighter the jeans the better, tight jeans meant less movement, which translated to less rubbing and less noise, especially when wet.

Today we honor the 19 elite #warriors who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Red Wings 17 years ago. We also remember their family, friends, and teammates who carry on and honor their sacrifice with unparalleled resilience.
On June 28th, 2005, a small team of U.S. Navy #SEALs were on mission in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan. Their mission was compromised, and they were met by more than 50 enemy insurgents who pinned them down for an extended period resulting in the death of three of the four team members. A rescue helicopter carrying eight additional SEALs and eight U.S. Army/U.S. Army Special Operations Command #NightStalkers was subsequently shot down, making Operation Red Wings one of the darkest days in United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and #NavalSpecialWarfare history.
