Royal Marines will surge ahead with their bold modernisation in 2021 after a year of experiments, trials and their customary front-line successes around the world in the past 12 months.
The commandos continued to deliver on global operations, from the heat of the Gulf to the sub-zero Arctic and tropical Caribbean and Mediterranean, on Royal Navy ships and stationed on land as part of a high-readiness force, ready to deploy wherever most needed.

Avro Vulcan of No. 44 Squadron approaches the coast. This photographs was taken in 1982.
The squadron was disbanded in December that year. A few months later the last Vulcans were taken out of RAF active service.

Trafalgar-class submarine HMS Trenchant and Royal Navy Wildcat HMA2, attached to Type 23 frigate HMS Iron Duke (F234), participate in a passenger exchange during exercise Saxon Warrior 2017, Aug. 5. Saxon Warrior is a United States and United Kingdom co-hosted carrier strike group exercise that demonstrates interoperability and capability to respond to crises and deter potential threats.

HMS Mersey has hit the ground running in the first fortnight of 2021 with intensive operations and training around the UK.

The one and only time I saw a Vulcan in flight was at McConnell AFB KS in 73-74 timeframe. McConnell was an F-105 Thunderchief (and KC-135) base at the time. The Thuds were awesome, but seeing that Vulcan was a treat, especially for a punk kid that was airplane-crazy!! I recall they flew a few laps around the base before landing -- quite a sight.YAY, YAY, what a beauty!!! ? I just love that wicked looking thing--Vulcan!!I've never seen an bad shot of a Vulcan in flight!!

Royal Marines are deployed to the frozen Arctic to conduct their annual cold weather training. The Commandos are in the North of Norway learning to be winter warriors conducting Arctic survival training in bitterly cold temperatures. The conditions are harsh around 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle, where the sun barely rises and temperatures plummet to below -30C.

RFA Wave Knight alongside in the Mersey
RFA Wave Knight, the lead ship of the Wave-class of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, is currently alongside at Liverpool Cruise Terminal. After a short refit in the Liverpool docks at Cammell Laird, post-refit activity is underway before she gets back to work.
The MoD has reportedly been trying to shift Wave Knight/ Wave Ruler on for a while now, including an attempted sale to Brazil in 2010. With the re-introduction of Carrier Strike, they will, however, be more crucial than ever in delivering the RFA’s exceptional capability- with RAS assets needed for CSG, FOST and others tied up in unforgiving refit cycles, the RFA really shouldn’t be losing fast fleet tankers at a time like this.

Today F-35B Lightning aircraft from RAF Marham conducted essential operational training, including Air to Air Refuelling, with Rafale aircraft from the French Fleet Air Arm of the French Navy. The training also included personnel from the Royal Navy School of Fighter Controllers who were controlling both sides from RNAS Yeovilton. This training provides the opportunity to integrate with our French allies and enhance the collective defence partnership further.
The training took place within the supersonic offshore range area off the South coast of the UK. Today this activity resulted in a sonic boom from an F-35 being heard in areas of Cornwall. The aircraft was 25 miles from the coast, sonic booms are not usually heard from the mainland, however climatic conditions may have been a factor today.
Any inconvenience caused to local residents is regretted.
