ANDERSON Allan Parkinson. Signalman Tyneside/Z/8304 Royal Naval VR on HMS Queen Mary. Son of Edwin and Miriam Ann Anderson, of 5, Cuthberts Yard, Haggersgate, Whitby, Yorks. Died at sea 31 May 1916 aged 22. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

Born 09 February 1887 to Charles Aaron and Hannah Blackstone. 1911 His head of the house aged 24 occupation, general labourer, Residing with to younger brothers at Hamilton Yard Church Street Whitby.
Died in the North Sea 22 September 1914. His sister Nellie of 01 Ellerber Lane, Church Street, Whitby was informed of his death

BOOTH Albert. Ordinary Seaman (Mem had Able) (Po) J/56050, Royal Navy on H.M.S. Simoom.
Born 12 June 1898 at Whitby to William and Julia Booth, of 10, St John’s Street, Whitby. He enlisted 4 August 1916 on HMS Victory I. Civilian occupation, gas fitter.
Died at sea 23 January 1917 aged 18 as the result of his ship being torpedoed and sunk by a German destroyer S.50 in the North Sea. His father was informed of his death who was residing at the above address.
Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Son of George and Thirza G. Brown, of 38, Thomas Street, Grimsby. Died at sea 31 May 1916 aged 20. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

Poss BURNLEY Samuel H. Assistant Cook, Mercantile Marine Reserve on (Hired Yacht) H.M. Yacht Zaida. (Note, Not Royal Navy) Born 1896 to Joseph Samuel Walker Burnley and Clara Burnley, of 11, Church Street, Whitby, Yorks.
Died at sea 17 August 1916 aged 20.

During research, found the following
No one is quite sure how it was sunk. One suggestion it was likely sunk by Turkish shore batteries and not by German submarine U35 which was operating at the time off the Scillies, another was it was sunk by a mine of the coast of Turkey.

Born 15 March 1884 Whitby to James and Fanny Clark, nee Dryden.
Died 03 September 1917 aged 33 at Chatham, Kent. His sister Martha Jane Clarke of 127 Church Street, Whitby was informed of his death. At rest in Woodlands Cemetery, Gillingham, Kent.

Husband of Sarah Ann Estill.
Died of pneumonia 26 November 1917 aged 34. His widow of Westfield, Ladysmith Abenue, Whitby was informed of his death. At rest in Larpool Cemetery, Whitby, Yorkshire.

BARTON Harwood Woodwark. Flight Cadet, Pilot, of Royal Air Force. of 63 T.S. RAF Joyce Green at Long Reach, near Dartford.
Born 1901 to William and Sarah Margaret Barton, of 15, Esk Terrace, Whitby, Yorkshire.
Killed in a flying accident whilst flying solo in an Avro 504, serial number D6306 the 2 July 1918 at RAF Joyce Green.
His father was granted a war gratuity 3 May 1919 revised 1 March 1920.
Cause of accident. At about 300 feet he did a half roll and got into a vertical nose dive which engine full on. Failed to come of same.
Court of Enquiry. The court having examined the wreckage and considered the foregoing evidence are of opinion that the accident to Avro No.6306. Engine No. 3549. W.D. 38337 in which F/Cadet H.W.Barton was fatally injured at about 11-15am on July 2nd 1918 at Joyce Green, Dartford was due to the following causes.
1. When coming out of a half roll, had not sufficient height to recover, put on his engine and crashed to the ground.
2. That F/Cadet H.W.Barton received injuries to the skull, which caused instantaneous death.

Born 1896 to Sam and Mary Hind Bulmer, nee Movley of Whitby, Yorks. 1901 aged 5 years she was visiting the home of Mary Ann Wardman at Upper South Side, Easingwold, Yorkshire. Her parents were not mention of the census for this address. Her parents for the same year were residing at Holley House, Filey, Yorkshire. 1911 with her parent at The White House Hotel, Whitby, Yorkshire. Her father was the hotel proprietor. She died of cerebro-spinal fever. 23 March 1917 aged 21. Her father was granted a war gratuity 22 June 1920.
Commemorated in the United Kingdom Book of Remembrance, Berkshire.

Enlisted 10 February 1916 at Liverpool, New South Wales aged 24 years and 4 months, occupation, marine engineer. His parents at the time of his enlistment resided at Phoenix House, Church Street, Whitby, late at 46A Baxtergate Street, Whitby. Embarked from Sydney on A40 Ceramic for overseas 25 June 1915 to England. Perham Downs, Chichester. Embarked for Galipoli 3 September 1915, disembarked at Alexandria the next day. Disembarked Alexandria for BEF 1 June 1916 disembarked at Marseilles 9th June. Received shrapnel wounds to his forearm and scalp. Invalided to England from Boulgone on Hospital Ship, Newhaven 6 September 1916. Admitted into Graylingwell War Hospital, Chichester West Susses the following day. Transferred to No 1 Convalescent Camp, Perham Down, Wiltshire 5 October 1916, He was sent home on leave 14 October. After he had completed his leave he returned to No 5 Camp, Perham Down and later posted to Engineers Training Depot, Brightlingsea prior to embarkation. He embarked from Folkstone 16 May 1917, disembarked at Etaples the next day. His record do not state where he went to prior to re-joining his unit in the field 24 May 1917. It may have been a Base Depot. His records also records that he was killed in action in Belgium 2 June 1917 from gun shot wounds to an arm, legs and body. His wounds may have been inflicted by a machine gun. His death and cause of death was reported by 9th Australian Field Ambulance.

Husband of Irene Lethbridge Chapman, of Tarafal, Crowthorne, Berks, England. Served 15 years in the South African Campaign with British South African Police. Served at Gallipoli, 1915.
Killed in action 15 August 1917 aged 39.

Disembarked England 22 March 1916 and taken on strength with 1st Canadian Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe. Embarked for France with his unit 24 April 1917 and taken on strength with 7th Battalion.
Reported missing in action, presumed kill the 15 August 1917. Commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France.

Born in registration district of Whitby, 17 April 1889 to George Broderick and Jane Corner, nee Corner. 1891 with his widowed mother and brother, George Robert at York Road, Stranton, Durham.

The children were Noel aged 13, Edward Elgie. aged 11 and Maxwell aged 10.
His mother left New Zealand for Australia where she resided at Perry River, Gin Gin, Bundaberg, Queensland
Death information from his service records.
26 March 1917 in Egypt he received gunshot wounds to his left thigh resulting in a compound fracture. He was treated in No2 Australian Stationary Hospital, later transferred to 31st General Hospital, Port Said. The 05 April 1917 he was reported dangerously ill, and he died of his wounds 08 April 1917 aged 27. At rest in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

Enlisted 29 June 1914 and joined the West Yorkshire Regiment at Whitby aged 26, occupation hairdresser. He resided with his parents Edwin and Matilda London, nee Body at 02 Alma Street, of Stapleton Road, Bristol. He was medically discharged from Whitley Bay Military Hospital 22 October 1915 suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis, tuberculosis of lung and tubular larynx. The cause of his illness was aggravated by exposure to wet and cold weather on ordinary military service.
Army registers of Soldiers’ effects 1901-1929 record his death 13 November 1917 at Bristol.
FreeBMD show his died December quarter 1915 aged 26. His mother was granted a war gratuity 12 November 1919.

Died at sea 4 July 1917 aged 18. The ship was torpedoed without warning and sunk by submarine, 0 miles South from Belle Ile. 21 lives including the Master were lost.
