Born 1901 to William and Sarah Margaret Barton, of 15, Esk Terrace, Whitby, Yorkshire.
Killed in a flying accident whilst flying solo in an Avro 504, serial number D6306 the 2 July 1918 at RAF Joyce Green.
His father was granted a war gratuity 3 May 1919 revised 1 March 1920.
Cause of accident. At about 300 feet he did a half roll and got into a vertical nose dive which engine full on. Failed to come of same.
Court of Enquiry. The court having examined the wreckage and considered the foregoing evidence are of opinion that the accident to Avro No.6306. Engine No. 3549. W.D. 38337 in which F/Cadet H.W.Barton was fatally injured at about 11-15am on July 2nd 1918 at Joyce Green, Dartford was due to the following causes.
1. When coming out of a half roll, had not sufficient height to recover, put on his engine and crashed to the ground.
2. That F/Cadet H.W.Barton received injuries to the skull, which caused instantaneous death.

Her parents were not mention of the census for this address. Her parents for the same year were residing at Holley House, Filey, Yorkshire. 1911 with her parent at The White House Hotel, Whitby, Yorkshire. Her father was the hotel proprietor. She died of cerebro-spinal fever. 23 March 1917 aged 21. Her father was granted a war gratuity 22 June 1920.

Enlisted 10 February 1916 at Liverpool, New South Wales aged 24 years and 4 months, occupation, marine engineer. His parents at the time of his enlistment resided at Phoenix House, Church Street, Whitby, late at 46A Baxtergate Street, Whitby. Embarked from Sydney on A40 Ceramic for overseas 25 June 1915 to England. Perham Downs, Chichester. Embarked for Galipoli 3 September 1915, disembarked at Alexandria the next day. Disembarked Alexandria for BEF 1 June 1916 disembarked at Marseilles 9th June. Received shrapnel wounds to his forearm and scalp. Invalided to England from Boulgone on Hospital Ship, Newhaven 6 September 1916. Admitted into Graylingwell War Hospital, Chichester West Susses the following day. Transferred to No 1 Convalescent Camp, Perham Down, Wiltshire 5 October 1916, He was sent home on leave 14 October. After he had completed his leave he returned to No 5 Camp, Perham Down and later posted to Engineers Training Depot, Brightlingsea prior to embarkation. He embarked from Folkstone 16 May 1917, disembarked at Etaples the next day. His record do not state where he went to prior to re-joining his unit in the field 24 May 1917. It may have been a Base Depot. His records also records that he was killed in action in Belgium 2 June 1917 from gun shot wounds to an arm, legs and body. His wounds may have been inflicted by a machine gun. His death and cause of death was reported by 9th Australian Field Ambulance.

26 March 1917 in Egypt he received gunshot wounds to his left thigh resulting in a compound fracture. He was treated in No2 Australian Stationary Hospital, later transferred to 31st General Hospital, Port Said. The 05 April 1917 he was reported dangerously ill, and he died of his wounds 08 April 1917 aged 27. At rest in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
