Aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and the guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63) receives fuel during a replenishment at sea from the Royal Australian Navy auxiliary oiler replenishment ship HMAS Success (AOR 304).
USS KITTY HAWK was the lead ship of the Navy’s second class of "super carriers" and the second ship in the Navy to bear the name.
Since August 1998, KITTY HAWK was homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, where she relieved the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) as the only forward deployed aircraft carrier in the Navy. The KITTY HAWK left Japan for the last time in mid-2008. After participation in RIMPAC 2008, the carrier continued to San Diego, Calif., to meet the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) for turn-over. The GEORGE WASHINGTON replaced the KITTY HAWK in Japan.
Decommissioned on May 12, 2009, the KITTY HAWK is now laid up at Bremerton, Wash.

USS COWPENS is the 17th TICONDEROGA class guided missile cruiser and the fifth ship in that class built by Bath Iron Works in Maine. In January 2013, the COWPENS was relieved as a forward deployed naval unit by her sistership ANTIETAM (CG 54). During the hull swap, the crew of the COWPENS took over the ANTIETAM and the ANTIETAM crew sailed the COWPENS back to San Diego, Calif. At the moment, the COWPENS is laid up at San Diego, Calif., as part of the Navy's Cruiser Phased Modernization Program. The ship will later undergo modernization and return to service by 2021, replacing an older sistership. The program follows a 2-4-6 plan meaning that each year no more than two cruisers will be placed in phased modernization; no cruiser will remain in phased modernization for more than 4 years; and no more than six cruisers may be in phased modernization at the same time. During the lay up, the ship is maintained by a small 45-sailor crew.

HMAS Success (OR 304) is a Durance-class multi-product replenishment oiler serving in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney, Australia, during the 1980s, she is the only ship of the class to be constructed outside France, and the only one to not originally serve in the Marine Nationale (French Navy).
